Dwight was born in Sterritt, Alabama to Burl "Buck" and Marie Hollis on November 22,1935. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Dunnam Hollis, on September 8, 1955, and together, they had two children, Tim and Melanie.
Dwight was a 1954 graduate of Jones Valley High School in Birmingham, Alabama. ln 1954, Dwight began his long and successful career as a claims adjuster with State Farm lnsurance Company. He was an accomplished businessman, opening the first claims office in Columbus, Mississippi. After moving to Jackson, MS, Dwight attended Mississippi College and maintained certification through La Salle Extension University. He retired in 1999 after devoting 45 years to State Farm. After retiring, he continued to work part-time for Williford, McAllister, and Jacobus, LLP for many years.
Dwight had a deep love for the Lord. He blessed many by serving as an ordained Deacon and Sunday School teacher, formerly at Broadmoor Baptist Church and currently at First Baptist Church of Madison.
Throughout his life, Dwight had a passion for gardening, golfing, and vintage cars and trucks. He also enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sense of humor brought joy and laughter to all that knew him. Dwight was a quiet man and always showed kindness, compassion, and respect to others.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Dunnam Hollis of Madison, son Tim (Angie), and daughter Melanie Hollis Wilson (Doug); grandchildren Matthew, Ashley (Chase), Auston, Lauren, Kristen (Nick), Katie, and John; great grandchildren Hayden, Logan, Dallas, and Wren; brother Roger Hollis (Martha) of Bloomington, IL, Aunt Marylyn Briskey, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Burt and Marie Hollis.
Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home on Thursday, April 26 from 5-7 PM and prior to the Funeral service at First Baptist Church of Madison on Friday, April 27 from 9-11 AM. Funeral service at FBC Madison will begin at 11 AM, followed by a brief graveside service at Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
The family would like to thank those who have loved and supported Dwight through his illness, especially the people of FBC Madison and Broadmoor Baptist Church, and the staffs of St. Catherine's Village and Hospice Ministries, and Dr. Bobby Graham and staff for their exceptional and loving care. ln lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dwight's honor to the building fund at FBC Madison.
