Mitchell Henry Harkins MD

February 24, 1925July 26, 2012

Mitchell Harkins passed away July 26, 2012 at the age of 87 in Jackson. The funeral service will be held at St Richard Catholic Church in Jackson at 10 AM Saturday July 28th. Interment will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be Friday, July 27th at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on Highland Colony Parkway in Ridgeland from 6:30 until 8:30 PM with a Rosary service following. The family will also, receive friends one hour prior to the service hour at the church.

Mitchell was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Catherine Rogers Harkins, brothers, Msgr. Thad Harkins, Joe Harkins and sister Alice Harkins. He is survived by his children, Cathy Kruse (Tommy) of Mobile, AL, Mitchell Harkins, Jr (Linda) of Ridgeland, MS, Pat Harkins (Becky) of Madison, MS, Steve Harkins of Ridgeland, MS, Thad Harkins of Birmingham, AL, Brad Harkins (Chloe) of Birmingham, AL, Margaret Capone (Lou) of Grapevine, TX, Charlie Harkins (Elizabeth) of Mobile, AL, Sean Harkins (Michele) of Lumberton, TX, Mary Cecelia Bokros (Randy) of Jacksonville, FL. 23 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Sisters, Eileen Weisenberger of Clinton, MS and Mary Louise Maier of Lansing, MI. and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Dr. Harkins, a long time general surgeon in Jackson, retired in 1991. He graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1942. He attended Millsap’s College and graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1951.Dr. Harkins began his medical practice in 1956 in the Medical Arts Building in Jackson. He was on staff at St. Dominic Hospital, Baptist Hospital and River Oaks Hospital and was a member of the American Board of Surgery.He served as a medic during World War II in Europe and was awarded the Soldier’s Metal for heroism for saving another soldier’s life.

He was a lifelong fisherman and enjoyed making his own fishing lures. He was also an avid gardener, planting and harvesting a variety of vegetables from his back yard garden. He best loved being surrounded by his large and ever growing family.
