Ralph B. Hamil

June 13, 1939October 8, 2012

Ralph Hamil, devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, encourager, loyal friend, faithful servant, selfless giver and passionate lover of his Heavenly Father…words fail to pay tribute to a man so loved and cherished, died Monday, October 8, 2012 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM today followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM all at First Baptist Church of Madison. Entombment will follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland.

From the onset of the disease throughout the long and difficult process even in his darkest hour amidst the pain and horror of cancer draining the life from his physical body, he remained strong, determined and faithful. He knew without question who held his hand and found true contentment and joy in Jesus Christ no matter what state he found himself in. The sparkle in his eyes and quick wit arose from the joy in his heart and blessed all. He was truly the hands and feet of Jesus to everyone he came in contact with. His ministry was far and wide, starting with his family and extending to the teachers and children at the schools where he prayer walked, to people he met in the grocery store, to the doctors and nursing staff who cared for him until the end.

He heard the voice of his Heavenly Father and he responded without question. His love of his family was only surpassed by his love of his Lord whom he knew intimately. Always a man of few words, during his final days a river of wisdom flowed forth and we drank in every word. His focus throughout this life was to point everyone to his Saviour and to glorify HIs Father. As we heard over and over, "when you go to encourage Ralph, you always walk away being encouraged by Ralph". His focus was on lost souls and he became a constant intercessor.

His legacy will be the fruit of his labor and we know that when he arrived at his final destination he heard these words from his Father, "well done good and faithful servant".

Matthew 9:37, 38 The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.

Even as a young child, I had deep respect for him and now as an adult, that respect is even deeper. I treasure memories of my conversations with Mr. Hamil. He was a man who lived an abundant life glorifying His Creator. Many have learned more about God through him and his service. We are in prayer for his family. He will be greatly missed.

While talking to my sister on Monday, i told her that i was going to a funeral Wednesday for the sweetest man. She asked his name and when I said Ralph Hamil, she gasped and burst into tears. She told me that in 2004, when her 25 year old son- in- law, Darrell, was sick with liver cancer and both he and Britton had to quit their jobs, Ralph came to see them several times.. (they were FBC members, although inactive) He also slipped money to my dad ( Erskine Gandy) to give to Britton and Darrell and didn't want them to know where it came from.. he did that a couple times.. What a ministry to a young, devastated couple! Darrell died later that year, but my niece and my sister will never forget his kindness.. i wonder how many more such stories of his quiet kindness and generosity there are....more than we will ever know, i am sure.. For me, he set an example of living his faith that I will strive to live up to.. please know how grateful we are to have known Ralph and how fervently we will be praying for all of your family.. Ralph was an example of the way Christians should live. He was always about the work of the Lord. Your family is an example for all to model after. I'm so sorry for your loss and you're in my prayers.

Alice and Family,
I have just read the tribute to Ralph and I was please to see all that I felt about him expressed there. He was among the first to greet me at FBC Madison when Alton and I came in 1998. He also called me by name and shook my hand as a fellow believer in our Lord Jesus every Sunday afterwards. Brother John asked me to attend with some men from our church, a training weekend to learn how to plant a church. There I learned more about this remarkable servant of God. We will all miss him and the way he prayed to His Father as if He were right there beside him in the room.

Your loss is great but your joy in knowing that you will be with Ralph again is victory indeed - victroy for all of us.

Love, Blessings, and prayers,
