Born October 1946 in Indiana, but raised in Savannah, Georgia, Sammy grew up embracing the warmth and rhythm of the South. He spent countless joyful summers at Tybee Island with his mom, dad, and sister—days filled with sun, surf, family stories, and the simple happiness of being together by the sea.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Sammy served honorably in the United States Army. The strength, discipline, and quiet courage he developed during his service remained with him throughout his life.
In his youth, Sammy was a talented amateur boxer who competed in the Golden Gloves. Known for his speed, grit, and never-back-down spirit, he carried that same fighting heart into everything he did.
Sammy enjoyed a long and successful career in the steel industry, where he excelled as a top salesperson. His charisma, sharp instincts, and relentless drive made him one of the industry’s standout performers, consistently closing deals and building lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike.
He was an impeccable dresser—always sharp, always put-together, with a style that turned heads and reflected his pride in how he presented himself to the world. Sammy was also deeply generous, quick to lend a hand, share what he had, or brighten someone’s day without seeking recognition.
Above all else, Sammy was a loving husband, devoted son and brother, stepfather, grandfather, and doting father to his small dogs, Taco and Theo. He treated those little companions like his babies, talking to them in the sweetest, most animated voices—carrying on full conversations as if they understood every word.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dell Waxman, who was his partner and best friend for thirty-eight years; his stepchildren, Chalen Jones Chibe (Paul Chibe) and Chip Tubbs, whom he loved warmly; his granddaughters Sloane Yeager Tubbs and Harley Tubbs, who affectionately called him “Big Daddy”; and a circle of family and friends enriched by his steady presence, dry humor, and generous heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Solomon Waxman and Kathleen Guffey Waxman, and his sister, Julie Waxman.
Sammy’s legacy endures in the memories of his service to country, his time in the ring, the sharp way he carried himself, his remarkable career success, the kindness he showed others, and the overflowing love he poured into his family. A celebration of his life will be held March 21, 2026 at 12:00 PM with visitation prior starting at 10:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a veterans’ support organization or the Jennifer Sterling Brown Animal Rescue League.
Rest easy, Sammy—your fight is won, your style unmatched, your deals legendary, and your voice still echoes in the hearts (and ears) of those who loved you most.
