Sherrell Ray Thornton, 68, of Ridgeland, MS passed away on January 14, 2021. He was born in Pittsburg, TX to Ray and Shirley Thornton. He graduated from Callaway High School in 1970 and from Mississippi College in 1977. Sherrell worked in the hardware industry for years before he purchased Montgomery Hardware Company in 1996. Along with his wife, Lea, he owned and operated three Ace Hardware stores over twenty-five years.

Sherrell was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Madison. Sherrell was a “preacher’s kid” and after accepting Christ at a young age he spent years assisting his father, Ray, with growing and starting churches in Florida and Mississippi. He served as a part-time minister of music in his Dad’s churches as well. Sherrell was a wonderful person who exemplified character and integrity in everything he did. He strove for excellence in everything he did and was admired by friends as well as business associates.. Known for his kindness and generosity, he was often referred to as a “Southern Gentleman.” He spent his life showing kindness to others and showing his family how to love, not only with words but with actions. He loved his family with his whole heart.

Sherrell is survived by his wife, Lea; a daughter, Kristin and her husband Christopher; a sister, Rachel and her husband Tony; niece, Lindsay and her husband Porter. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.

Our condolences to Sherrell Ray's family. I knew him most of my life since we were both preacher's kids. And ditto to what everyone else has said about his kind heart and gracious spirit. His Dad, Ray, and my Dad were closest of friends through the years. The Thornton family has touched many, many lives for Christ. I pray God's comforting grace upon his family.

I met Sherrell in 1970 when we entered Jacksonville College. He was one of my favorite dorm buddies. He had a great singing talent and sang in the men's quartet at JC. He and I were almost killed one night south of Jacksonville on US 69. He led singing at FBC-Keltys and asked me to accompany him there on a Wednesday night. He had his Comet wound up when we topped a hill and a 2000 lb. bull was standing in the roadway. We missed it by inches, and the semi-tractor trailer rig behind us hit the bull. It would have demolished our car. My prayers are with his family.
