Sonja was born in Ashland, Kansas December 11,1932, to parents Bert M. and Florence L. Stark. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Jane Duncan.
Sonja was most proud of her family, and is survived by her sister Gea Popp, children Michael (Mary), Gea (Garry), Ron (Jean), Bert (Tammy), 10 grandchildren, as well as several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was a very dedicated and lifelong member of St. Columb’s Episcopal Church, serving as a member of the choir, altar guild, and Daughters of the King. Always wanting to provide strength and encouragement to others, Sonja and her daughter Gea ran the St. Columb’s Iona House food pantry for several years, bringing joy to those in need.
Sonja had a fun-loving nature, from showing affection for every furry pet, eating ice cream from the quart container or hot brownies from the pan while watching old westerns on tv. Her genuine love for others and funny wit was contagious and brought a sense of comfort to her family and everyone she met. Sonja had a gift of making everyone around her feel special, always having time and patience for those that needed it most. She always put others first, never thinking of herself, and will be sorely missed by her loving family and friends.
Sonja’s family would like to thank the excellent staff at Compere’s Nursing Home and PAX Hospice for their kindness and care.
Visitation will be held at St. Columb’s Episcopal Church Thursday, September 4th at 2:00, followed by a memorial service at 3:00.
