Truly Graves Daniel passed away at St. Dominic’s Hospital on Monday, May 16, 2011 after complications of pneumonia.
She was born in Jackson, MS on May 11, 1927 to parents B.B., and Evalyn Power Graves. She descended from a pioneer family of Jackson and was the grand daughter of J.W. Power and the great grand daughter of Colonel J.L. Power, both of whom served as Secretary of State of Mississippi. Colonial Power served in the Civil War and fought at the siege of Vicksburg, MS.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Joe H. Daniel, her parents and her brother B.B. Graves, Jr. Her surviving children include, Evalyn Graves Bishop of Charlottesville, VA; Leslie Bishop Weaver and husband Richard Weaver of Pensacola, FL; Beatrice Brisbane Daniel and partner Cheryl Jesitus of Charlotte, NC; Walter Lee Daniel and wife Lynda Edwards Daniel; and her grandchildren Holly Key Broxson of Pensacola, FL; Summer Weaver and husband Jason Weaver of Wetumpka, AL; and Lauren, Brooks and Blakney Daniel of Jonesboro, GA as well as great grandchildren Noah Daniel of Jonesboro GA and Grant Weaver of Wetumpka, AL.
She attended Power elementary school named for Colonial Power. She graduated from Central High School and received Bachelor’s degrees from Millsaps College and Mississippi College in Elementary Education and Library Science, respectively. She served as the children’s librarian at Power Elementary School when she returned to Jackson to live in the late 1960’s.
A creative Spirit, she was a master at making a beautiful home and space for friends and family. Late in life, she became an artist, using watercolor, pastel and oil to create her paintings. It truly was her joy and her art adorns the walls of family and many friends. She studied with Diane Norman and many other wonderful teachers. She was a member of the Mississippi Watercolor Society and the Mississippi Artist’s Guild. Beyond her talents as a mother, wife and artist, she had a quick wit and smile, a spunky spirit, great generosity, and a deep compassion for others. She was an active communicant of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, the church home to her family for over a century. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
A celebration of her life will be held at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Friday, May 20, 2011 at 1:30 pm with family visitation at the Cathedral from noon to 1:30 pm.
