Bryan Keith Garrett, also known to many of his friends as Ryan, Age 61, passed away on St. Patrick’s Day March 17th, 2022, after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Bryan was born on June 9th, 1960, in Cheyenne Wyoming to Kenneth and Linda Lee Kuczora (Hughes). After being born in Wyoming, Bryan was on the move often as the family was assigned to various work locations affiliated with missile testing in the early days of the space program. After Wyoming, came Rapid City, South Dakota, Denver, Colorado, Tucson Arizona and finally California. After moving to California, Linda divorced and then got remarried in 1967 to Emery Garrett who adopted Bryan, Kevin and Kathy and they took the Garrett name. Little brother Anthony arrived in 1969.
Bryan’s intelligent mind and sarcastic wit was only matched by his intense love of Star Trek in particular and Sci-Fi in general. He loved discussing the arc of characters in Star Trek and the complexities of the amazing special effects of the time. Bryan often dreamed of one day being part of the Star Trek family in some form. Whether it was attending one of many conventions he attended over his lifetime or visiting Star Trek movie sets, he was certainly at the leading edge of being a “Trekkie” in the 1970’s. Bryan also had a passion for other shows that dealt with space and science fiction. Space 1999, Lost in Space, Star Wars as well as Battlestar Galactica were among his favorites. But Star Trek was his “first love”. Bryan also had a guilty pleasure of watching romantic comedies when he was not binging on the many forms of Star Trek. Bryan’s second love was the Ford Mustang. Bryan owned various mustangs over his lifetime that he lovingly restored and eventually sold to start the next one. He built kit models when he was not restoring the real thing.
Bryan Attended Savanna High School in Anaheim and graduated from Norco High School in 1978 after a move to the Inland Empire. After attending college briefly and working as a property manager and a brief career in editing tech manuals and electronics manufacturing, Bryan joined the United States Air Force in April of 1982. While in the Air Force, Bryan was nominated for “Airman of the Year” at his foreign duty station in Italy and he attained the rank of E4. Bryan left the service in April of 1987 and after trying his hand at several jobs, found work in Sacramento, California where he lived for the last 30 plus years of his life and where he had many friends. Bryan’s last career stop was working for Progressive Insurance in their Customer Service department where he assisted clients and brokers daily for over 13 years. Sadly, he said he never got to meet Flo.
Bryan was the oldest of four children and is survived by his three siblings Kevin Garrett, Kathryn Bourassa (Garrett) and Anthony Garrett as well as 30 nieces and nephews and too many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins (Well Over 100) to be listed here.
A celebration of Bryan’s Life will be held at 2:30 pm Monday May 9th at Riverside National Cemetery 22495Van Buren Blvd Riverside, CA 92518. He will be buried with full honors.
In parting, We are sure Bryan would like you all to abide by a few of his favorite Star Trek quotes in his memory; “Live Long and Prosper”- Spock, “Live Now, Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again” Capt. Picard. And lastly, “Perhaps man was not meant for paradise. Maybe he was meant to scratch and claw all the way”. Capt. Kirk.
