Charles (Chuck) John Dougherty Jr. was born on January 10, 1938 in Washington D.C. to Charles John Dougherty Sr. and Virginia Margaret McNulty. He had 3 siblings: Joseph, Michael, and Margaret Catherine.
When Chuck was a child his family moved around a great deal since his father was in the Navy. During WWII Chuck and his younger brother Joseph (Joe) lived on a farm in Maryland. Between 1947 and 1949 he and his family lived on the Navy base in Yokosuka, Japan. Both Chuck and his brother, Joe, attended a Catholic school on base. They both played baseball with the Japanese students who also attended the school. Chuck was always looking for little jobs he could do to earn extra money. He used to shine shoes for extra money at the Navy barracks when he was between nine and ten years old.
As a teenager, Chuck enjoyed making angel food cake every week with egg whites. He spent his extra money on buying rye bread, ham, salami, and cheese to make himself the kind of sandwiches that he enjoyed. For fun he used to enjoy watching roller derbies on television and drinking root beer floats. Chuck sold San Mateo Times newspapers on street corners in San Mateo, California. When he was between thirteen and fourteen years old he and his brother, Joe, spent summers picking cherries and apricots in Redwood City in Santa Clara, California.
Chuck attended three different high schools. He attended San Mateo High School, Manteca High School, and Tracy Joint Union High School in Tracy, California, which he graduated from in June 1957.
Chuck was in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1955 at the age of 17. At the age of 20, on February 13, 1958, Chuck began active duty in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in China Lake, California and Long Beach, California. While in the Navy he served aboard the U.S.S. Brush from June 14, 1959 to July 15, 1961. While Chuck was aboard the U.S.S. Brush, the U.S.S. Brush visited Okinawa, Japan several times, Hong Kong, the Subic Bay, on the Philippine Island of Luzon, Yokosuka, Japan, and Oahu, Hawaii. Chuck also served aboard the U.S.S. Harry E. Hubbard. On December 29, 1961, Chuck was discharged from the U.S. Navy.
On April 27, 1963 Chuck married Jean Margaret Roe, who emigrated from England. Chuck and Jean had four children. The oldest of the four is Jean Margaret, born on May 13, 1964. Debra Ann was born on March 22, 1965, John Charles was born on April 10, 1968, and Victoria Yvonne was born on July 15, 1977. Chuck and Jean also have seven grandchildren: Kylie Nicole, Alexis Marie, Alyson Rose, Michael Alexander, Jacob John, Jillian Natalia, and Aubrey Brianne.
After leaving the Navy, Chuck began working for Otis Elevator in Santa Ana, California. Later, he was a groundskeeper for Chino School District in California. In 1970, he began a career with the State of California as a warehouse worker at California Institution for Men in Chino, California. Chuck was later promoted to Warehouse Supervisor. In 1983, Chuck transferred to California Youth Authority, in Chino, California, where he was also a Warehouse Supervisor. In January 1993, at the age of 55, Chuck retired from the State of California.
After his retirement, Chuck enjoyed traveling in Europe and the United States. He visited the countries of England, Ireland, and Scotland with his wife, children, and his grandchildren. Chuck enjoyed long road trips to Washington and Oregon. The butterfly gardens in Victoria, British Columbia and the rose gardens in Portland, Oregon were among his favorite places to visit. While on vacations, Chuck liked going to the local grocery stores, such as Super Wal-Mart.
Chuck spent quite a bit of time going to yard sales and auctions, with his son John, looking for small treasures. Both his houses, in Chino and Las Vegas, were filled with treasures that he had bought over the years.
Chuck’s children and grandchildren were fond of hearing Chuck talk about his life as a child, about when he was in the Navy, and about when his own children were little.
Chuck was a resident of Chino, California for forty-eight years. While it was not easy for Chuck to leave his children and grandchildren, in November 2010, Chuck and his wife, Jean, decided to move to Las Vegas, Nevada, where they purchased a home. After moving, they visited Chino often, especially at holidays.
After a long illness, Charles (Chuck) John Dougherty Jr. passed away on February 15, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
