Reading these posts as I lie awake tonight not be able to sleep. Miss you as do so many others I know you are happily resting in the arms of Jesus. I WOKE UP THIS MORNING WITH A FLURRY OF THOUGHTS IN MY HEAD. AND I FELL I LIKE I KNOW HANK BETTER THAN ANY ONE IN THIS ROOM. BUT I STAND HERE AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY. YET I COULD TALK ABOUT HANK FOR A HUNDERED YEARS.

HANK WAS FULL OF LIFE, FULL OF LOVE. 
EASY TO LOVE, AND IMMPOSSIBLE TO FORGET.
 HAD SUCH AN INFECTIOUS PERSONALITY. IF HANK WAS YOUR FRIEND YOU HAD A TRUE FRIEND, AND YOUR LIFE JUST IMPROVED. (JOE DA'NAPOLI) LETTER ON A FRIEND.

HANK WAS A BIG BROTHER TO ALL OF US IN ALL OUR FAMILY. EVERYONE WOULD GO TO HANK FOR ONE THING OR ANOTHER, COUSINS, AUNTS, UNCLES, CLOSE FRIENDS WHOEVER. HANK WAS THE GO TO GUY. BUT TO ME:  HANK WAS MORE THAN A  BIG BROTHER. WE HAD A DAVID AND JOHNATHAN TYPE RELATIONSHIP.  AND WE SHARED THAT RELATIONSHIP ALL OF OURS LIFES.

IT STARTED IN 1968 THAT OURS LIFES PARALLELED EACH OTHER AND IT WAS PRETTY MUCH THAT WAY FROM THEN ON.

HANK WAS LIVING WITH PATTY AND KRIS NICHOLS ON SALTA STREET IN SANTA ANA. THAT'S WHERE HANK MEET DARLA, AND I MEET RO.  THAT'S A FUNNY STORY IN IT'S SELF.  I DID SOMETHING TO HELP ARLENE, SO SHE TOOK A LIKEN TO ME.  I STARTED LIKEING RO, BUT RO DIDN'T LIKE ME, BECAUSE HAD A CRUSH ON HANK.  HANK LIKED DALRA, BUT DARLA DIDN'T LIKE HANK. 

HANK WAS BLONDE HAIRED, BLUE EYES, HAD SO MUCH CHARISMA, AND COULD CHARM THE SOCKS OFF OF YOU.  DARLA GAVE IN AND MARRIED HANK (HOW COULD SHE RESIST) . RO REALIZED THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNATLY HAD CLOSED FOR HER, SOOOOOOO, THAT'S WHERE I COME IN.

WE MARRIED SISTERS, BOTH IN A THE ARMY, WE BOTH ENDED UP IN GERMANY. CAME HOME AND WORKED IN THE WRECKING YARD BUSINESS TOGETHER, FOR UNCLE ART.  

THEN IN 1975, OURS LIFES TOOK A BIT OF A DETOUR.  FEB THAT YEAR, I GAVE MY LIFE TO JESUS.  I WAS SO EXCITED. THE FIRST PERSON I TOLD WAS DENNIS ANDERSON, AND THEN HANK.  HE THOUGHT I WAS A LITTLE NUT'S. BUT WAS ALWAYS PATIENT AND KIND. HE WOULD JUST LISTEN AND FIND A REASON TO GET THE HECK AWAY FROM ME. 

IN 1976 WE MOVED TO RIVERSIDE ( I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M STILL HERE ). I STARTED A BUSINESS THAT REQUIRED ME TO GO TO WRECKING YARDS ALL OVER THE PLACE AND BUY ENGINES FOR DIFFERENT MACHINE SHOPS. I WOULD ALWAYS GO TO AMERICAN AUTO WRECKING WHERE HANKS WAS WORKING. THAT GAVE ME AN EXCUSE TO SEE HANK, TALK WITH HIM AND I KNEW I WOULD ALWAYS GET A GOOD DEAL. HANK WOULD ASK ME WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR, SO I'D POINT SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS.  I COULD ONLY AFFROD HALF OF WHAT I WANTED, BUT SOMEHOW ALL OF IT ENDED UP IN MY TRUCK, (SORRY UNCLE ART.
HANK WAS ALWAYS SO BIG HEARTED. HE HAD A  HEART AS BIG AS TEXAS. HE WOULD GIVE YOU THE SHIRT OF HIS BACK.  WELL! IN HANKS CASE, A TANK TOP.  AND LUCKY IT WAS JUST HIS SHIRT, BECAUSE IF IT WAS HIS BIRTCHES, THEY'D BE HOT PINK BICYCLE SHORTS. 

IT WAS JUNE OF 1978. I REMEMBER LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY. HANK WAS LIVING ON JAMES STREET IN HUNTINGTON BEACH. (HE AND DARLA HAD BEEN SEPARTED FOR A WHILE).  IT WAS A THURSDAY NIGHT WHEN I GOT THE CALL.   HANK CALLED ME ALL EXCITED AND SAID: TIM, YEAH, I WENT TO CALVARY TO NIGHT AND I GAVE MY LIFE TO JESUS.  I THINK I WAS IN SHOCK. MY REACTION  WASN'T QUITE WHAT HANK WAS EXSPECTING.  I JUST KEPT ASKING ME ARE YOU SURE?  TELL ME HOW IT HAPPENED AGAIN.  AND HE'D TELL ME. YOU'RE SURE YOU SAID ALL THE RIGHT WORDS?  I WAS SO EXCITED.  

HANK AND DARLA REMARRIED.  IT WAS THE END OF 1979 OR THE BEGINNING OF 1980. HANK QUIT WORKING FOR AMERICAN AUTO (SORRY UNCLE ART) AND MOVED TO PHOENIX ARIZONA.  WE PACKED UP OUR 2 TRUCKS AND HEADED OUT. 
WE PULLED INTO AL DECKERS DADS PLACE. UNLOADED ALL HANKS STUFF IN HIS GARAGE, UNTIL HIS HOUSE WAS READY.  IT WAS LATE AFTERNOON AND I HAD TO HEAD BACK TO CALIF. WE STOOD IN THE DRIVEWAY TO SAY GOODBYE.  HANK HUGGED ME, AND KISSED MY NECK, AND TOLD ME THAT HE LOVED ME MORE THAN ANYONE IN THE WORLD. I DROVE AWAY AND WE WERE BOTH CRYING.

AND NOW HE'S GONE AGAIN. I WISH I COULD HAVE ONE MORE CONVERSATION WITH HANK: I'D LIKE TO ASK HIM ONE MORE QUESTION:

HANK WAS DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?

HANK AND THE FAMILY WERE IN ARIZONA FOR 6-8 MONTHS. MOVED BACK HERE. STAYED WITH RO AND I FOR A WHILE. THEY MOVED INTO THERE OWN PLACCE SHORTLY THERE AFTER. HANK AND I STARTED WORKING TOGETHER EVERYDAY. WE DID EVERYTHING TOGETHER. WE WERE NEVER APART MUCH AFTERTHAT.

WE STARTED DOING CONSTRUCTION WORK TOGETHER. HANDY MAN TYPE STUFF. THIS IS WHERE HANK AND I WERE OSCAR AND FELIX.  HANK WAS KNOWN NOT TO BE TO FUSSY ABOUT THING.  I WAS A BIT OF A PERFECTIONIST.  MY ATTITUDE WAS MEASURE TWICE CUT ONCE. HANKS WAS BEAT IT TO FIT AND PAINT IT TO MATCH. I'D LIKE TO APOLIGIZE TO AL CALLE' HE BOUGHT A CAR FROM HANK THAT HE FIXED. 

IN MARCH OF 1982 WE BOUGHT CROSSROADS.  AND THE SAME TRAIN OF THOUGHT WAS CONSISTENT. MINE OCD, HANKS WAS BEAT IT TO FIT, AND PAINT IT TO MATCH.  ONE AFTERNOON HE GOT SO ANGRY AT ME,  AND SAID YOUR FIRED:  SO I SAID YOU CAN'T DO THAT. HE WHY? I SAID BECAUSE I OWN THE PLACE. WE JUST LAUGHED. 

AND FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS WE JUST WORKED TOGETHER, VACATIONED AT TIMES.  HAD OUR UPS AND DOWNS, BUT MOSTLY UP'S. I HAVE SO MANY STORIES TO TELL BUT THERE'S JUST NOT ENOUGH TIME TO TELL THEM ALL.  

HANK USED TO HAVE ALL KINDS OF SAYINGS. BUT THE ONE HE USED MOST WAS: 
3 ATTA BOYS A DAY AND YOU CAN GO HOME.

ON DEC 21ST HANK GOT HIS 3RD ATTA BOY. NOW HE'S HOME. THE VERY LAST TIME I SAW HANK HE WAS AT MY MOM'S HOUSE. I WALKED INTO HIS ROOM AND WAS LYING THERE READING HIS BIBLE. THE VERY LAST PICTURE I SAW ON FACEBOOK WAS HANK SITTING AT A DESK READING HIS BIBLE.

Dad's Eulogy


Most of you know I am a teacher however I'm also a former union executive board officer and current chief negotiator for VVTA. I am sometimes called in when somebody is in a jackpot and one of my sayings is, “There is no positive spin to this!”
 Well thankfully because of our faith and love in Jesus Christ the above statement is NOT TRUE!! While and I, and many others are deeply saddened by my Dad's death, we are at the same time overjoyed with the knowledge that for the first time since he was a boy of 12 or 13 he is truly happy and content! He has been in Heaven with our Savior since December 22, 2013 and things could not be better for him now. So while we grieve his loss let's remember two things: 1. He is in paradise happier than ever. 2. We will see him again one day.
 My Dad was at his heart a good man. He was not perfect, but I do not recall any malice in his actions. He was fun to be around, the life of the party. We often remember people for what they did do, but let me tell you some things my Dad not do. 1. He never spoke an ill word about anybody, no matter who. I'm still amazed by this because I live by the philosophy, “If you can't say anything nice about somebody then come sit by me.” Not my Dad though it was just not his style. 2. He was never disloyal. My Dad was loyal to a fault, this is a trait I am happy to say I did get from my Dad and am proud of it. 3. My Dad never excluded people, he did not care who or what you were if you wanted to come along for the ride you were always welcome. This is another trait I am happy to say I also got from him.
 When I first received news of my Dad's passing I did not know how to respond. I knew I had to inform the family, but it was hard for me. I loved my Dad, and it was hard for me to be around him the last 15-20 years. By no means am I saying I loved him less it was just complicated for me. What I found in the coming days was that I had nothing but great memories of the first 20 years I knew my Dad. These are what I hold onto, and these are what I ant to talk to you about today.
 I remember when I was a little boy how excited I would be waiting for my Dad to get home from work. I couldn't wait for him to pick me up, so that I could pester him with all the questions I had, and he always answered them, in his own way. I remember so clearly for years, probably till I was 12, that my Dad would come to my room every night and pray with me and to sing. He loved to sing, even though he was tone death. I remember my Dad taking me to work with him many times between the ages of 7-12, letting me do whatever I wanted, causing nothing but havoc at the job site, yet he never failed to bring me back. As I got older I remember my Dad teaching me to play bridge, and playing with him, my Mom, Danny, and Donny. These were some of my fondest memories. 
 I could go on and on but let me wrap up with both some common and little known facts about my Dad. I think most of you know he loved the movies, he took my Mom at least twice a week as long as I can remember, but did you know his favorite movies were anything with Elvis? You all know my Dad was never afraid to do an embarrassing thing, but did you know he could not watch a TV or movie scene that was embarrassing, without closing his eyes? You all knew he was one heck of a water skier, quite an accomplishment for somebody who really dislike sports, but did you know he was one of the best card players and luckiest gamblers I have ever seen? Finally, you all know he was one of the funniest guys to be around, but do you know he will be even more fun once we see him again in Heaven!! See you in Heaven Dad, I love you. 

Ray (Hank), You kind of ticked me off by leaving earlier than we agreed upon, but sometimes our plans don't quite fit in with our Fathers'.  We had one heck of a ride for 44 years and 8 months!!  We truly became brothers and each inherited a new family!  You have no idea the pain that I have, but, then again, you probably do.  Please keeping the adjoining bunk empty for me.  I love you so very much and I know that your peace has finally been attained.  I love you, Al

Hank did not like me very much when I first met him 23 years ago.  He thought that I was taking his best friend away from him.  He soon realized that we could coexist with Al and become dear friends.  I grew to love Hank for his generous heart and his wonderful sense of humor.  I will miss him and his great stories. in my previous post talking about the tile job it says "did get mad".. should of been "didn't get mad" .

I was 18 when I moved to California. Young dumb kid. Hank took me under his arm and always...always made me feel at home. I remember the first job he gave me was to put tile down in his new house on porter street.  Never laid a piece of tile in my life but he took the time to show me how to do it and gave me the confidence that I could.  I screwed it up of course and when he came home after work he just hung his head and shook it.  Did get mad just got down on his knees and helped me make it right (which it never was) and paid me anyways.  2 months later he tore it all up and did it over himself but never said a word about it to me. He gave me another job (which I still have to this day ..I'm 50 now) working in the wrecking yard. He was so patient and such a great teacher and encourager, when you worked for hank you always wanted him to be proud of you. I have such fond memories of driving back and forth to work with him in that blue 72 blazer with the top off.  Man I loved that truck and he did too. I remember how pumped I was when he let me take my girlfriend to vegas in it.  19 year old punk kid, he was so generous like that. We used to play this stupid game in his truck but we both loved it.  We would point to something in the truck and use it in a sentence.  I would point the radio and say don't "tune" me out man. And he would point the steering wheel and say I would never steer you in the wrong direction brother!  So on so forth until one of us couldn't come up with the next line. To me hank was always the optimist. But I guess the things I admired most about him was that he was always for the underdog and he always made people feel like they counted ...2 very Christ like qualities.  My biggest regret is that these last 10 years I wasn't even close to as good of friend to him as he was to me.  See you when I get there brother.  Love Dan

Ted and I send our condolences to the Campbell family. We have great baseball memories as our sons played Little League together. We will always remember Hank with his special smile, funny laugh and such generosity, and never forget the "fanny pack" he always wore! smiling now just thinking about him.

Another fond remembrance. Once (twice actually) Hank and I drove down the coast to our grandparents (Campbell) place. They had an apartment right on the beach somewhere by Oceanside. Hank brought his surfboard and we surfed, swam, and laid on the beach for most of the day and then ate our grandmothers good cooking...stew I think. It was so much fun..like a perfect day. We hardly talked, we just had big smiles on our faces.   Robert nichols

Dear Campbell family I am so very sorry for your loss. Hank was an extraordinary person. He had a huge heart for anyone he came in contact with. His laugh was contagious and his wit matched his laugh. He was the kind of person everyone called "friend" and when you walked out of his presence you chuckled and were glad you had taken the time to be with him. Hours later you would find yourself laughing again at something that had transpired with him.  Al, myself, Darla and Hank had many wonderful adventures, shared onion sandwiches and played cards until we couldn't play any more :-)  Great times and wonderful memories. 
You took care of everyone you possible could and you lived as hard as you loved. You will surely be missed by all. Rest in peace dear man... rest in peace.

To a man who was full of love and compassion and even amongst his challenges here on earth, still had so many qualities he shared with the Jesus he loved. You are missed and loved by many Uncle Hank, but you are now home where you belong and in the arms of Jesus, the One who knows the number of the hairs on your head, stored your tears in a bottle, knew your sitting up and your lying down and loves you with a love indescribable. I haven't been part if the family for a number of years- but I do have memories of when I was. One year my boys and I couldn't afford a Christmas tree. Hank took us down to a.tree lot, where the trees were free( it was Christmas eve) . It meant so much to us and we had a great time decorating it. There were other memories, but this one stands out the most. Prayers to Hanks family.

My memories of Hanko are all from childhood.  We were all pretty close as kids and somehow just lost that closeness as we grew up and went our separate ways.  Hank was such a funny guy as a kid and the only guy I ever saw light his on fart on fire.  We had a lot of fun as children and I will always remember him that way.  My heart goes out to Darla and the kids.

You showed me how life works and always seemed to handle every situation in a whimsical manner that never failed to make me smile. You were the most loving and considerate person I have ever known. Much love...Ryan be strong man!

Hank was awesome. Never too busy to talk to you or help you out. I am so fortunate that I got to know Hank and experience his humor and kindness. Hank was rough around the edges and absolutely charming. People liked dealing with Hank because of his unique spirit and whether they were customers or friends Hank would find a way to connect with them and make them laugh. I'm blessed to take the stories and humor that Hank shared with me and share them with others because they are funny as you know what... Hank I love you dude, you made life more interesting, I am so grateful I got to know you, to experience your sweet spirit, and I am truly sorry your humor and energy are forever gone from this world. May you rest in peace.

Hank, yes you had a great sense of humor and wonderful smile.But I will always remember the tender heart and deep love you gave to your family and those around you. Can't wait to see you in heaven laughing with and praising our Lord!

Dearest Hanko,
You gave so much of your heart and soul. When you walked into a room it was time for laughing.   Growing up around you was fun!  So many childhood memories...you always made sure that everyone was happy.  I could hear your laughter from down the block.  Even as we all got older you still wanted to take care of everyone, and many you did. I loved the way you loved your people.  I know my parents are so happy to see you..they loved you so...Thank you for your love and your laughter sweet Hanko.  I love you!

Hanko - I'm so sorry we didn't keep in touch over the years.  You just always think there's time!  You were a month older than me and I have very fond memories of you as a boy.  My heart goes out to your family.  Love, Becky

Miss you uncle Hank!  You have been there for me in so many ways and I wish I could have thanked you more, even though you never wanted thanks for how you helped. So selfless in your actions, humble in your words, and grounded in your advice. I am happy to know that you are with The Lord, but am sad thinking that you are gone from us here. We will miss you and you will always be in our thoughts, prayers, and memories. Thanks for always being there.

Hanko you were the coolest, biggest hearted person I have ever known. You always loved me and my family and made us feel very special. I am a better person for knowing you. Our hearts are broken.... it will never be the same without your beaming smile, one liners and contagious laughter! Thank you for loving us and making room in your heart for love. I know you are in Glory and united with the greatest love of all, Jesus! Our love to Darla, Ray, Jody, Julie, Ryan, Aunt Gail, Tim, Pam, Greg, Penny, Donnie & the many many others who love you....May God's great love comfort each one.

I'm so thankful to The Lord that you're my brother. My life has been blessed because of you. We grew up together, never apart. Best friends as teenagers, Married sisters, in the Army, and we both were stationed in Germany. lived in the same town for 30 years, and worked together for over 25 years. Your gone now, and I can't stop thinking about you. I thought I knew what pain was, but I had no idea. I know I'll see you again, but right now my heart is broke. I can't find the words to say how much I love and miss you. Its 4:30 in the morning and I just woke up thinking about you and crying. I wish you were here Hank. I could sure use a hug right now!

Oh my gosh!! I don't even know how to process this!  Hank, Hanko was one of my favorite cousins!!  We were so close and shared so many happy times.  He was just so full  of laughter and life and always made whatever we were doing more fun!! I know God called him home for a reason, but it just doesn't seem fair that he is gone.  I know he is in Heaven right now talking to all the special people who have gone before him.. My mother ( Hank's Aunt Barbara) just passed away in June, and she always loved Hank too, so I know they are probably having a wonderful reunion right no:-)  The last time I saw Hank was when Donny died and I saw him at the hospital.  We were talking and he gave me such a nice hug and told me I would always be his pal...sigh...I will miss him and I am sending my prayers to Darla, his children and all of his family. God Bless you Hank and your family!!

Hank's funeral is all set for Thursday the 9th at Harvest.  Viewing is at 10:30 the service starts at 11:30 and we finish at the Riverside National Cemetery for graveside services at 1:30. Afterwards we will have food at my house.

Hey dad I love and miss you with all my heart.  There was never a time in my life that you weren't there for me.  I could depend on you no matter the sacrifice you had to make even up until your last breath.  I will remember you forever.  You are the most important person in my life.  I love you.

Growing up with Ray, got me into more trouble than any young man was entitled to.  I will miss you my friend. My sincerest and heart felt condolences to the entire Campbell family during this time of sorrow.

There is not a memory I have of you that doesn't bring a huge smile to my face! I loved you like an Uncle and thought you were the coolest (even with a fanny pack) and most fun man alive!!! Whether it be a softball game, breakfast after church, Christmas Day, riding in the bronco or a vacation...if you were there it was always MUCH better!!! I will miss you and look forward to seeing you in heaven!
