

In his early years, he attended the Naval Prep School and graduated from Troy High School in 1971.
James loved to read and spend time with his father, Bob Hathaway, as a boy. He won Mr. Buena Park in 1962 and was a member of Boy Scouts of America until he was an Eagle Scout in his teens. He was an avid music lover who enjoyed the Beatles, Metallica and U2. He played the guitar, accordion, and clarinet. He built and participated in soap box derby. He proudly played football and ran track & field for Troy HS in Fullerton, CA.
At age 18, James joined the Naval Forces where he proudly served his country. He was stationed on the USS kitty Hawk 1971-1973 and completed 2 tours in the Vietnam War. Shortly thereafter, he worked as a sound technician for
Jethro Tull in the 70s. He became a Production manager for the aerospace industry in the 1980s. He worked for GSi for 20+ years where he retired and met the love of his life
Liza La Rue, in which he married on September 30, 2000.
He moved to Riverside, CA in 2002 with his family. He also was an avid animal lover. He loved to attend church and study the gospel daily. He sadly became sick in 2008 with Chronic Kidney Failure and needed hemodialysis 3x's a week for 8 years. James will be remembered for his compassion and gentleness as a husband, brother, son, father, and friend in Christ. He was deeply loved by his family.
James is survived by his parents, Robert and Karaan Hathaway of Fullerton CA, Brother, Bob Hathaway of Fullerton, CA, sister Terri Vaccher of Fullerton, CA; wife Liza Hathaway of Riverside CA, and children; Nathan La Rue of Riverside, CA; Natalie Remington of Washougal, WA; Nicholas La Rue of Portland, OR; Veronica Contreras of Chino, CA, Brandon Hathaway and his grandchildren.
