Jim was born April 15, 1936 in Long Beach, CA. He graduated from San Pedro High School in 1954, and shortly after, moved to Mira Loma, where his parents had built a new home.
He started his working years as a Journeyman Lather, and in 1962, changed his trade and became a Truck Driver. He worked for Matich Corp., E.L. Yeager, Linde Air, and several local cement companies. Jim always worked hard to provide for his family. While he was a truck driver, Jim started attending Riverside City College, later taking classes at Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona. While taking college classes, he became fascinated with learning how to prepare income taxes. He later worked for Shepherd, Reynolds and Scholl, CPA’s in Corona, and finally went into business for himself. He started doing taxes for individuals and visited their homes by appointment. When his practice grew too large to travel, he opened a small office in Glen Avon. In 1997 he moved his office to Riverside and opened a joint practice. In December 2010, he opened a new office where he was in practice with his son, Steve Kanouse.
Jim constantly continued his studies, became an Enrolled Agent, and later, a Certified Financial Planner. He strived to do the best job possible for his clients. For the last 20 years, Jim was an NASD Registered Representative with HD Vest Financial Services, always a member of their Top 75 Advisors in the US. Jim also served on State Board for the California Society of Enrolled Agents, was president of the Inland Chapter of CSEA, and a member or RTCA. Jim continued to be an active investment representative and tax advisor until his death.
As an avid fisherman, Jim took many fishing trips out on the ocean with his wife Judy and also developed great friendships with other fisherman he met through the years. He was an active member of the Mission Bay Marlin Club, and spent as many hours and days as possible on the ocean.
Jim married his wife, Judy, on November 25, 1959. They have three children and six grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter Julie (Darrell), son Steven, (Pam) and daughter Melanie (Paul). His grandchildren are Scott, Trais and Andy, Jared and Mandy, and Maggie and Sarah.
Jim passed away peacefully, at home, in Riverside, CA surrounded by his family with love. He fought a short battle with Small Cell Carcinoma. It won.
