Joyce Elinor Goudeau

If you were fortunate enough to know Joyce, you knew you had a friend for life.

With profound sadness and hearts filled with love, we celebrate the life of Joyce Elinor Goudeau, who peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Laurel, Mississippi, Joyce spent her early years there before moving to Los Angeles, California, during high school, where she attended Locke High School.

In 1975, she met the love of her life, Laurence Edward Goudeau. They began building their life together in 1976 and were united in marriage on May 22, 1982, sharing more than four decades of love, partnership, and unwavering devotion.

Joyce’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, beloved sister, aunt, and loyal friend. Her home was always open to family, friends, and anyone who needed a helping hand or a place to belong. Joyce had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome, valued, and loved. She would gladly give the shirt off her back or the food from her own plate if it meant helping someone else. Her kindness wasn’t something she did—it was simply who she was.

A woman of many talents, Joyce was first and foremost a devoted stay-at-home mother before serving as PTA President at Serrano Elementary School in Moreno Valley. She later became a Special Education Counselor and Aid with Somerset Educational Services. She supported and encouraged students, while guiding and mentoring them into future career paths and opportunities. Whether she was helping children succeed in the classroom or volunteering with her children’s sports groups as a cheer mom or basketball team mom, Joyce poured her heart into helping others reach their fullest potential.

Joyce was wonderfully creative and found joy in painting, drawing, sewing, baking, cooking, and restoring old furniture into beautiful treasures. She loved collecting dolls, artwork, Tiffany lamps, copper pieces, figurines, collectible dishes, and treasured family photographs. She also had an incredible eye for fashion and was a true fashionista, always expressing her vibrant personality through her impeccable sense of style.

Her home reflected the warmth of her heart, filled with her own artwork, treasured photographs, and cherished memories of family and friends. It was often filled with the music she loved, especially the timeless voices of Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder, and the unforgettable sound of The Gap Band. She especially looked forward to birthdays (especially her own!), Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, when her home was filled with laughter and the people she loved most.

Those who knew Joyce will forever remember her unforgettable smile, her larger-than-life personality, and her incredible sense of humor. She was a natural jokester who could make anyone laugh and brighten even the hardest days. Joyce was loving, compassionate, generous, positive, faithful, fiercely loyal, welcoming, selfless, and strong. She had an incredible ability to encourage others and make them believe in themselves. Though lovingly stubborn at times, it always came from a place of deep love and conviction. Her favorite saying, “Okey Dokey Artichokie,” will forever bring smiles to the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Doris Jean McLeod Gray and Raymond Gray; her sister, Sylvia “T-Syl”; and her cherished nephew, Jacoby “Coby.”

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Laurence Edward Goudeau; her beloved children: Josh Goudeau and his wife, Jesenia, along with their children, Nicolette, Josh Jr., and Klaytin; Gemaysa Goudeau and her wife Jennifer, along with their daughter, Allyssa; Khaleilah Goudeau and her daughter, Gemaysa “Fuzz”; and her stepson, Steven Goudeau. She is also survived by her beloved siblings, Varnetta “Nitta” and Raymond “Brother”; her cherished nieces and nephews, Raishawn “Charlie,” Rayshane “Mimi,” Michel’le “Missy,” Sharaya “P,” Chardonnay “Nunu,” and Mackenzie “Kenzie”; along with countless extended family members, dear friends, former students, and all whose lives were forever touched by her love, laughter, and generosity.

Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Joyce’s legacy lives on through every person she encouraged, every child she helped, every meal she shared, every laugh she inspired, and every life she touched. Her love was unconditional, her generosity endless, and her spirit unforgettable.

Joyce will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
