Lucas Jacobus Pol, aged 91, passed away quietly at Westmont Memory Care in Riverside on Monday, July 19. Lucas was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands on Jan. 4, 1930, to Maria Van Porten-Pol and Albertus Pol. He was one of nine children and is survived by his sisters Rie Pol, Betty Hendriks and brother Frans Pol of The Netherlands.
Young Luke emigrated to Brisbane, Australia in early 1955 to start his career as a mechanical draftsman. He married in that same year to his Dutch fiancé, Marie L.J. Johanna Bastin in the city of Melbourne, Australia settling in Heathcote, NSW, Australia where he built his own home and the community's small Catholic church with the help of neighbors and friends.
In 1964, Luke and his family emigrated to Southern California. He obtained his Building contractor license and started his own business Luke Pol Construction in Riverside specializing in commercial buildings with the help of two of his sons. Luke retired in Riverside at the age of 74 and later moved to Running Springs, Ca and then on to the mountains of Park City, Utah over a six-year period. Missing the warm climate of Southern California, Luke and his wife returned to Riverside in 2008 where they enjoyed living closer to their grandchildren.
Luke enjoyed trips to Canada, Europe and around the U.S. to visit family, camping, coaching, watching soccer and sailing on his boat the “Zephyr" in nearby Lake Perris. He also enjoyed hiking in the hills of Sycamore Canyon close to his home in Canyon Crest.
He is survived by his faithful wife of nearly 66 years, Johanna, his five children Frank Pol of Moreno Valley, Lucas Pol of Santa Ana, Leonie McAfee Pol of Midway, UT, Gary Pol (Jolene) of Ogden, UT and Maria Reynolds (David) of Cathedral City. He is also survived by eight grandchildren Natalie Morano Pol, Alana Pol, Travis Pol (Destiny), Hannah Hollingsworth (Brad), Cody Pol, David Reynolds (Haley), Amanda Salamon (Jeffrey), Austin Pol and three great grandsons Bradley, Wyatt and Marcus Hollingsworth. He also leaves behind many wonderful nieces and nephews in Canada and The Netherlands.
