Marcille was born in Arcata California, on May 17, 1925. She was one of three sisters born to George and Hazel Garland. Her family remained in the area many years where her father farmed, worked as a lumberjack, and work in construction. She attended Humboldt State where she earned her bachelor’s degree from the Department of Education. During the early days of World War II, she met her future husband, Roman Albert Beck, recently from the Coast Guard Academy, who was temporarily stationed nearby. They remained in contact throughout the war. Upon Roman’s discharge from the Coast Guard, they were married on December 26, 1946 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in West Los Angeles. They initially made their home in Montebello Park, where she taught elementary school. Later they moved to Whittier. In 1954, in response to her husband’s recent employment at Bourns Inc., Marcille and Roman moved to Riverside with their two sons, where they resided for the rest of their lives, she to become a full time homemaker.
The Becks remained members of St. Catherine of Alexandria parish since joining in 1954. Marcille was active for many years with the parish Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America and saw all three of her children attending the parochial school there. For a few years she also ran a small gift store as a sideline. In later years she was also active in homeless feeding projects, both at the National Guard Armory and also at Fairmont Park, where she was a familiar face on Fridays till she quit at the age of 88.
She was pre-deceased by her husband of 67 years in 2014. She is survived by her son Bruce, daughter Mary, both of Riverside, and son Roger of Dana Point and a grandson John of San Clemente. She is also survived by sisters-in-laws Rita and Helene, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Donna and Arvis.
