Nancy Lee was born on October 1, 1936, in Washington DC and she passed away on June 18, 2021, in Riverside CA after a battle with congestive heart failure.
Nancy Lee attended the Maryland School for the Deaf from elementary through her high school graduation in 1953. She attended Gallaudet University in Washington DC from 1953-1956. From 1962-1969 she was a keypunch operator at Lockheed in Sunnyvale, CA. She also taught classes for adult education and sign language at Ohlone College in Fremont, CA.
Nancy Lee received her bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from Cal State University Hayward in 1973. She went on to complete her master’s degree in special education (Deaf Education) at Cal State University San Francisco in 1977.
Nancy Lee was a teacher for 31 years at the California School(s) for the Deaf in Berkeley, Fremont and Riverside. She retired in 1998 but went back as a highly sought-after substitute teacher for an additional 8 years.
Family, teaching and traveling were her passions. She made an impact on many of her students’ lives.
She is survived by her second husband Thomas Gallagher of Riverside, CA. Her daughter Barbara Anne (Bobba) Schmidt of Mesa, Arizona, her son Michael Schmidt of Fremont, CA, her step-daughters Meg (Mark) Sanders of Tempe, AZ and Kerry (Brian) Hoover of Temecula, CA, Colleen Ryan of Fremont, CA. Grandchildren; Marietta Schmidt of Mesa, AZ, Nicholas Supalla of Corona, CA, Janel Schmidt of Sebastopol, CA, Ryan Sanders of Tempe, AZ, Ian Hoover of Tempe, AZ, Nathan Hoover of Temecula, CA, Naomi Sanders of Tempe, AZ and Joey Caruso of Temecula, CA. One great grand-daughter Nova Lee Schmidt-Gardner of Sebastopol, CA and good family friend Helen Thomas of Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Frank Joseph Schmidt (Riverside CA), sister Dorothy (Dottie) Young, brother-in-law Jerry Young, both of Bullhead City, AZ, brother John Mitchell Pumphrey (Texas), mother Catherine M. Pumphrey (Fremont, CA), father, John B, Davis (Skokie, IL), step-mother Beatrice Davis (Skokie, IL), step-father, John Mitchell (Mike) Pumphrey (Hayward, CA).
Nancy Lee will be buried at Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery in Hayward, CA.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either the American Heart Association or Gallaudet University.
