Norman Leger passed away peacefully on April 22, 2016 at the age of 98 at his home in Redlands, CA. Norman was born in New Bedford, Mass on September 6, 1917 to Alcide and Alice (Boudreau) Leger. He was a twin to his brother Raymond Leger, and an older brother to Emile Leger, both previously deceased . His father died when he and his twin were just two and a half years old and his younger brother was just one. He and his brothers were raised by his mother and other relatives.
Though he was raised without a father, during a very difficult time during the depression, he was an amazing father to his own four children whom he raised with his wife, Annette Jeanne (Rioux) Leger. He was married to Annette for 50 years until her death in 1998.
Norman served in the National Guard during WW2 and was a machinist by trade, retiring from Rohr Aircraft in 1972. He enjoyed golfing, was a self-taught handyman, and was constantly singing both in church choirs and solos, singing professionally in his early years. He continued to sing his entire life, even singing silly songs around the house just days before his passing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and often told corny jokes. He attended Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Redlands.
Annette and Norman moved from New Bedford, MA to Milwaukee, WI in 1950, then to Riverside, CA in the early 60’s where he resided until moving to Redlands, CA in 2005.
Norman is also preceded in death by his son Philip Leger, daughter-in-law Barbara Leger, and 1 great-grandchild, Shaylon O’mahony.
He is survived by his 3 children, Frances Elgas, Robert Leger, and Elizabeth Hites, son-in-law Scott Hites, daughter-in-law Janis Leger (Philip) and his 8 grandchildren, David Elgas, Jr., Eric Elgas, Jeffrey Leger, Michael Leger, Jose Berdeguez Leger, Amanda Brent Leger, Brianna O’mahony, and Alan Hites, 5 great-grandchildren, Leilani Berdeguez, Collin Leger, Keenan O’mahony, Reagan O’mahony, and Charlie O’mahony
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Acheson & Graham Garden of Prayer Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, CA, followed by a reception at the same location. The service will be officiated by Willie Behrends.
After cremation, his ashes will be spread at sea at a later date, in the same place where his wife Annette’s ashes were spread, at Lover’s Point in Monterey, CA.
“God hath not promised skies always blue
Flower strewn pathways, all our live through.
God hath not promised sun without rain.
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God hath promised, strength for the day,
Rest for the labour, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing kindness, undying love.”
