Our beloved Refugio Vazquez was born in Ayotlan, Jalisco on October 27, 1953 to Luis Vasquez Perez and Secundina Hurtado Lopez; he was the seventh of 10 children. His parents and siblings gave him a childhood full of love. The care and affection they had for each other was endless and shown daily. In his childhood, he described himself as being somewhat of a troublemaker, with an eagerness to work and a great enjoyment for food. His life at home was full of laughter, joy and happy memories.
At the age of 16, he came to the United States and started a new chapter of his life. He was amazed at the sights and life of Los Angeles, CA. This is where he got his first job, secured his first car and crossed paths with whom would be the love of his life, Alicia Medina. Their meeting was at a drive in Movie Theater where it ignited an instant connection between them. Sometime later, on January 31, 1975, they were married and remained happily married for almost 50 years. Refugio and Alicia were blessed with six children: Esmeralda, Refugio Jr., Raul, Cristian, Alicia, and Cynthia. His devotion to his family knew no bounds, instilling in them a deep love for one another and faith in Christ, ensuring they grew together in strength and unity.
Refugio found himself blessed as the family he built expanded. His children became parents themselves, and he was given the title of grandpa to 20 grandchildren: Emily, Arianni and Kathy. Angie, Melissa, Kimberly and Destiny. Christopher, Natalie and Kelsey. Breanna, Cristian Jr. and David. Josias, Amy, Esmeralda and E. David. Kailey, Jayleen, Aiza and 2 more eagerly awaited arrivals on the way. Added to his blessing was the privilege of also having six great grandchildren that he was able to know before his passing. Seeing the three generations that came from him grow. Refugio had a unique and loving relationship with each grandchild and great grandchild, all with their own jokes, laughs and memories.
Guided by the Lord and the support of his wife, Refugio started another chapter of his life by moving to the small town of San Martin de Hidalgo in Jalisco, Mexico. There, he undertook the monumental task of establishing the church ‘Iglesia Cristiana Misionera Dios Con Nosotros’ and expanded the kingdom of Christ. Brick by brick, with the assistance of his family and brothers in Christ, he constructed the church, nurturing its growth over time. Today, it stands as a beacon of faith, welcoming countless newcomers and visitors who seek to hear the word of God. Pastor Refugio felt the immense pride and privilege of being the founder of the church and its congregation, considering them an integral part of his existence—a sanctuary where he could preach and raise his voice in song, offering heartfelt praise to the Lord.
Throughout every day of his life, he lived to emulate Christ in all his actions, striving to walk as a righteous and integral man. His infectious laughter, brimming with jokes, illuminated every room he entered. As a pastor and fervent preacher of the Word of God, he filled hearts with his powerful sermons. Traveling from one location to the next to spread the word as a true servant of the Lord. His love for God, his delight in food and the enjoyment of life's simple pleasures was undeniable. Above all, he was deeply rooted in family values, his every endeavor guided by love and dedication to his cherished family. As a pillar of strength and diligence, his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, leaving behind a void that cannot be filled.
We will love and miss him always Pastor, Daddy, Grandpa and My Love.
