John Garvey, a devoted husband, father, and veteran, passed away on April 18, 2026. Born in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Robert and Edna Garvey, John spent his early years in Pocatello before his family settled in Salt Lake City, where he graduated from West High School in 1961.
John spent many of his summers and weekends working on the family’s 160-acre homestead in Ashton, Idaho. Working alongside his grandmother and Aunt Ruth, he helped maintain the farm’s rotation of hay, wheat, barley, and Russet potatoes.
John was a man of great technical skill and a tireless work ethic. After graduating from Trade Tech with a degree in Auto Mechanics, he became a business owner, operating his own Union 76 service station. He later spent 38 years as a mechanic and shop foreman for the Army Reserve Maintenance Shop. Even in his "off" hours, John was known as the neighborhood mechanic, working out of his home garage for decades to help friends and neighbors with their vehicles.
A dedicated patriot, John served in the Army Reserve for 32 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major (SGM). His service included a significant six-month deployment to Honduras, which remained a proud highlight of his military career.
While in college, John met Jane Hutchinson on a blind date. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on October 8, 1964. John joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 19 and remained a faithful member, serving in numerous callings including Scout Master Assistant, Ward Clerk, and at the Temple Recommend Desk.
John and Jane’s legacy is defined by their service to children. Together they raised ten children and provided a home for 240 foster children over a five-year period. John also spent significant time working and hunting on the family property in Hillard Flats, Wyoming, with his brother-in-law, Lynn, and family.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; his children: Devin, Shad, David, Matt, Gail, Lara, Lea, Kirk, Karon, and Sheila; his brother, Roy; his brother-in-law, Lynn and family; and 32 cherished grandchildren.
