Juan LaMar Hutchings from South Jordan, Utah died March 29, 2021 from complications of Covid and pneumonia in Gilbert, Arizona. He had just celebrated his 90th birthday with a two day zoom conference call where loved ones expressed stories and appreciation. Although weak and on oxygen, Juan tenderly expressed love and gratitude for each of his loved ones.

Juan was born 27 Feb 1931 at Riverton, Utah to Theodore Nephi Hutchings and Joyce Page. He was the oldest of four children, Gloria (Vere) Berrett, Gail (Tom) Dimond, and Gary (Joyce) Hutchings (deceased). He was raised on the Hutchings family farm and graduated from Jordan High School in 1949.
He attended the University of Utah for two years and applied for dental school and was accepted due to high scores on his exams.
Juan married Lucille Smith on 17 Sept 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple and moved to Chicago to begin dental school at Northwestern University.
Juan and Lucille had seven children: Garth R (Laurie) Hutchings, Blair L (Laurie) Hutchings, Lyle W (Jody) Hutchings (deceased), Pamela Mooney, Catherine (Steve) Nicholls, Diane (Andy) Johnson, Douglas S (Kathryn) Hutchings.
Juan graduated from Northwestern University in 1955 at the age of 24 with a DDS degree. He served in the Air Force as a dental officer at Larson Air Force Base, Moses Lake, Washington from 1955 - 1957. After which he practiced dentistry in Holladay, Utah for 3.5 years. Juan then applied to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where he attended for 2 years and received a master’s degree in orthodontia in 1963.
Juan and his family, with 5 children in tow left St. Louis and moved to Montclair, California and set up an orthodontic practice in Pomona, California where he had a successful practice for 26 years. He earned the distinguished rank of board-certified orthodontist in 1974.
Juan and Lucille moved to Claremont in 1963 and there they raised their family.
Lucille died 12 Oct 1981 from a brain tumor. On 11 Feb 1982 Juan married Darlena Drury and gained 4 more children, Teri (Ben (deceased)) Forbes, Lori (Brad) Kessler, David (Teresa) Drury, Leslie (Mike) Hayes.
After 34 years of marriage, Darlena passed away from cancer 29 Nov 2016. On 15 Sept 2018 Juan married Wanda Thompson Gocha and gained 4 more children, Robin Y. (Rick) Valdez, Ronda E. Mazingo, Wade J. Mazingo, Robert T. Mazingo.
Juan was a devoted husband and father. He provided various opportunities, gifts, and blessings for his family to create wonderful lasting memories. Juan got his pilot's license and flew his family across the United States, Canada, Bahamas, Central, and South America.
He leaves a legacy of 7 children, 8 step children, 57 grandchildren, and 102 great grandchildren. They were his pride and joy and life’s work.
Juan was very active. He was an avid bicycle rider, hiked, skied, kept a beautiful yard, did wood working, home improvements and repairs. He was active in flying dentists and provided dental work for children around the world. He taught orthodontics in Guadalajara Mexico for several seasons. He was an active member of the Kiwanis club.
Juan actively served others. He and Darlena served several missions for their church after retirement. Their first mission was in St. Louis Missouri. Later for an inner city singles ward. Finally Juan served in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.
Juan was very popular in his neighborhood driving his yard tractor to clear driveways and sidewalks after a snow storm.
Juan was a religious man, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a temple ordinance worker, in the bishopric, high council, home minister, and kept the ward building clean.
Juan was revered and loved by many.
