Born on February 21, 1970 to Earl and Vauna Garfield, Ray was the youngest of eight children. He grew up on a farm in Draper, Utah where he learned the value of hard work. When he wasn’t helping on the farm, he could often be found at his “second home” with the Palmer family, where he made lifelong friendships that stood the test of time.
Ray graduated from Alta High School in 1988 and soon after, served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in the Korea, Seoul West mission. He loved living in Korea, the people, the food and the culture. His experiences in Korea stayed with him throughout his life. Upon returning home, he attended Utah State University. One summer, while home working, he met the love of his life, Candice at a young single adult dance. They were married on September 18, 1993, and together built a beautiful life and raised five wonderful children who were the light of his life.
For 33 years, Ray worked as a construction inspector on commercial and heavy highway projects. He was dedicated and hardworking, known for his strong work ethic. Though his job demanded long hours, he never questioned his priorities, always putting Candice and his children first.
Ray had a great sense of humor, a contagious laugh and an infectious smile that could brighten any room. He was always quick with a quip or a perfectly timed comeback. He was an avid reader and loved coming home from the library with stacks of books that sparked his endless curiosity. His curiosity and passion for learning led him to have many YouTube “friends” from all over the world.
Ray adored Candice and cherished every moment with his children, treasuring their achievements, laughter and company. He loved cheering for his favorite sports teams, listening to ‘80’s country music, taking long drives, and spending time outdoors – especially off-roading, camping and walking along the beach. He also had a love for fast cars and a good movie. His devotion to his wife and children was unwavering, quiet but deep, and could be felt in everything he did. There are no words that can fully capture the depth of his love for his family.
Ray is survived by his wife, Candice; his children, Colin Garfield, Jacob (Cita) Garfield, Cameron (Jaquelle) Garfield, Alyson Garfield and Cadee Garfield. He is also survived by his siblings; Boyd (Patty) Garfield, Sue (Jack) Powers, Kory (Jeanne) Garfield, Lee (Tammy) Garfield, Jan (Robert) Nye, Tammie Higham and Paul (Ruth) Garfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Vauna Garfield, and his brothers-in-law, Steven Berrett and Ernest Higham.
Ray’s strength, laughter and love will be deeply missed, yet the impact of his life and his memory will forever inspire those who knew and loved him.
