Ricardo, AKA Alberto, Ricardito, Counselor, Dad, Grandpa, was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala on December 05, 1962. Eldest child of Dominga Veraliz Donis-Figueroa and Ricardo Petronio Figueroa Villate.
From his youngest days, Ricardo was always a very charismatic, adventurous and out-spoken person, for better and for worse. He loved to express his ideas eloquently, tell interesting stories, and devour entire encyclopedias. Books opened the doors to a world full of personal dreams, most of which he would conquer as an adult. He had a lot of energy and was attracted to take risks fearlessly. His adventures would often get him into trouble and frightened the hearts of some of teachers, his parents, and siblings. Still, nothing ever intimidated his free spirit nor diminished the creativity of his visionary mind.
After an eventful youth he set out to achieve his dream of being an attorney in the United States. Not only was he able to accomplish his goal, but he also went above and beyond. He would advocate for the rights of Latinos and would make sure they were well informed. He would go into centers of communities to make sure all would know they could have the representation they deserve. He argued cases against the highest courts in the land, won, and set precedents. As an immigrant who came to this country with nothing but aspirations and the clothes on his back he gave back to the community to ensure all could achieve their dreams as he did before them. All while being a loving husband to his wife and an exemplary example to his kids.
Ricardo met the love of his life, his wife Sonia, in September of 1991 and the rest is history. Together they traveled, raised a family, and were each other’s biggest supporters. As a father he made sure to instil his rigorous work ethic and values into his children. He taught them to be strong willed and as out-spoken as he was. Ricardo had a strong sense of adventure and family vacations are fondly remembered. On many occasions, Ricardo would come home and tell the family to pack a bag, get in the car and they were off on the road, heading anywhere their hearts desired. On some occasions Ricardo and family would wind up in San Francisco or at the Grand Canyon. Sometimes, they would road trip to Mexico to eat, go sightseeing and return in time for dinner. Either way, these adventures were a family staple.
Ricardo was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his 6 younger siblings, Lucia Carolina Figueroa Donis, Vera Del Carmen Figueroa Donis, Laura Isabel Figueroa Donis, Alejandro Rafael Figueroa Donis with whom he grew up, and Sofia Elizabeth Figueroa Navarro, Andres Ricardo Figueroa from his Dad’s second marriage; his loving wife of 31 years, Sonia Yolanda Figueroa, and his five children: Eduardo (Belen) Chomo, Richard Figueroa, Kimberly (Nolan) Foote, Dwight Figueroa and Kenneth Figueroa; and seven grandchildren: Emma, Luke, Callie, Sadie, Christian, Dean and one on the way, due in early November of 2025.
The impact Ricardo made was monumental. He dedicated his life to service, law, empowering others, adventures, and building a memorable life with and for his wife, children, grandchildren and to others who he mentored.
He is going to be greatly missed but he leaves behind a great legacy and will be remembered fondly. Memorial services will begin with a viewing at 9:00am, funeral at 11:00am, Friday, July 11, 2025 at the LDS Church located at 590 N 900 W Orem, Utah 84057
