Siegfried van Komen, age 95, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on September 26, 2026. He was born to Jan and Sibbeltje Zoutsma van Komen on March 19, 1931 in Groningen, Groningen, Netherlands.
Siegfried married the girl next door, Siebrandina Johanna de Vries on November 8, 1957 in Groningen. After the birth of their first son Richard John, they went on the adventure of a lifetime and immigrated to the United States, where they had 3 more children. They raised their 4 children together in Murray, Utah. They were happily sealed together in the Jordan River Temple on August 3, 2012.
Siegfried worked at Reynold's Machine Tool Company as an excellently skilled machinist where he designed and built BMW motorcycle accessories. He was dedicated to his career and to the company and stayed with Reynold's until his retirement. He had a brilliant mind and could fix almost anything from cars, appliances, and sewing machines, to bikes, motorcycles and anything else that needed fixing. He even had a small business repairing motorcycles in his garage.
Siegfried had an amazing tenor singing voice, and he played the harmonica like a pro! Even his whistle was beautiful to listen to. He always whistled for the kids to come home from playing in the neighborhood. He also spent a lot of time at the flea market on the weekends. He was great at finding treasures and useful things to fill up his garage!
For many years, he dreamed of building his own house for his family to live in. Even though it took longer than he planned on, he never gave up, and accomplished this great goal! Their home has always been open to their children and grandchildren in times of need.
Siegfried made friends wherever he went. He always carried a pocketful of mint candies, and handed them out to everyone whether it was at a store, the doctor's office or at church. He was known as the "Candy Man" at his ward, and the children always looked forward to receiving a mint from him. If you came to their house, you always got a chocolate or two.
Famous quotes we'll always remember from Siegfried:
"Don't take any wooden nickels"
"Keep a stiff upper lip"
"You have a GREAT day - and that's an ORDER!"
He is preceded in death by his parents Jan and Sibbeltje van Komen, his five sisters Lillian, Sonja, Thea, Gerda, and Jannie.
He is survived by his beloved wife Siebrandina Johanna de Vries, their children Richard (Helena) van Komen, Miranda (Scott) Harrison, Rudy van Komen, and Astrid (Mike) Meek, 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, his sisters Erica & Immy and his brothers Rudolf, Glenn and Jan, as well as extended family and many friends.
A viewing will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026 from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm at The Copperview 8th ward church building on 12154 South 3600 West, Riverton, Utah, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 pm. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Cemetery South Valley at 13001 South 3600 West, Riverton, Utah.
