

George Thomas Wren, born on August 2nd, 1934 in Logan, West Virginia has passed away at the age of 90 on July 23rd, 2025 in Roanoke, Virginia. George was a deeply loved husband, father, grandfather, and community member.
He was a lifelong academic, receiving his Bachelor's Degree from West Virginia University, his Master's Degree from New York University, and his Doctorate of Philosophy from University of Virginia where he later taught. He was an avid reader, a fan of bluegrass music, and Civil War enthusiast. George enjoyed learning about horseracing, healthy lifestyle practices, Tai Chi, and astronomy. He spent much of his free time at his granddaughter Taylor's softball games, in Grandin Village at the Roanoke Co-op and at the Grandin Theater, reading at Barnes and Noble, visiting the American Shakespeare Center, and with his family and pets.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Wren, and his son, John Thomas "Tom" Wren. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Elaine Williamson and son-in-law Jimmy Williamson; daughter-in-law Traci Wren; grandchildren Casey D'Alessandro and her husband Frank D'Alessandro Jr., Taylor Carter, Jordan Wren, Miles Wren, and Tommy Williamson and his wife Marlana Williamson. Great grandchildren include Valentina D'Alessandro, Sierra Williamson, and Devin Williamson; and great-great grandchild McKenna Dunbar. Additional beloved family members include Eddie Carter, the Burke Family in County Clare and County Dublin, Ireland, and his sister Linda Melton.
A memorial service for George will be held Monday, August 11, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5731 Airport Road NW, Roanoke, VA 24012. The eulogy will be read at 5:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life from 5:30pm-7:00pm.
