Nathan Spencer Cox, 49, of Cary, North Carolina passed away on April 24, 2026. He will be remembered for his kind heart, quick wit, passion for music, and remarkable sense of humor. He had a gift for making people laugh and bringing lightness to those around him.
Nathan was born in Arlington, VA on April 30, 1976 to the late Sally Spencer Cox and William Gary Cox. Raised in Roanoke, VA, Nathan grew up surrounded by a large extended family, a revolving door of laughter, and friendships that became lifelong bonds. He was equally blessed to spend summers and meaningful time in California with his father, stepmother, and younger brother and sister.
Nathan was a 1994 graduate of North Cross High School in Roanoke, VA, where he played football, golf, and saxophone. His passion for music eventually led him to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he graduated in 1999 with a degree in Music Business. He later made his home in Cary, NC where he joined his mother for over 15 years in running a successful State Farm Insurance business.
Music was one of Nathan’s greatest passions and a constant source of joy throughout his life. A devoted Deadhead, he found community, adventure, and inspiration in the music of the Grateful Dead, Phish, Widespread Panic, and countless others. For Nathan, concerts were more than entertainment; they were experiences to be shared, places of connection, and an escape into a world of music that he loved deeply. If you ever went to a show with Nathan, you know exactly what that meant.
His other passion was sports. His bi-coastal upbringing forged unwavering loyalty to the Washington Redskins and the San Francisco Giants, a combination that required both deep optimism and an even deeper tolerance for disappointment. Nathan had both. His love of the game extended far beyond the couch, inspiring siblings, cousins, and friends alike to share in the thrill both in-person or lively Sunday group chats.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sally Spencer Cox and William Gary Cox; his grandparents, William R. Spencer Sr. and Nelia May Spencer, and William Woodrow Cox and Kathleen Spencer Cox; Aunt Susan Spencer Butler, and mentor and friend, Ed Corson.
He is deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by his brother, Christopher Cox (Halina); his sister, Caroline Cox (Seth); nephews Kyler Jones of Modesto, CA, Ben Cox of Danville, CA and Heath Williams of Concord, NC; and niece Penelope Cox of Danville, CA; stepmother Tricia Cox of Mountain View, CA; stepfather, Ken Powell of Cary, NC; stepsister Tish Williams (Richard) of Concord, NC; uncles William R. Spencer Jr. (Debbie), Joel Spencer, and James R. Spencer, all of Roanoke, VA; cousins Kimberly, Brooke, Caroline, Matthew, Stephanie, Clayton, and Nikki; and countless extended family members and friends who loved Nathan like a brother, uncle, or fellow traveler.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 6-9pm at 5 Points Music Sanctuary in Roanoke, VA. In keeping with Nathan’s vibrant spirit and lifelong love of music, family and friends are encouraged to wear bright colors, tie-dye, or other cheerful attire to his Celebration of Life.
