Betty Evans Shapbell, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully in her bed on October 19, 2026, at the age of 94. Born in Perry, Florida, Betty was the daughter of William and Pearl Evans. She has now joined her parents, brothers Clifford and Lynwood Evans and her devoted husband of 31 years, William B. Shapbell, Jr., in eternal rest. Betty had another great love, husband Lincoln C. Bould, to whom she was married for 17 years, prior to his death in 1976.
Betty’s life was a testament to love, resilience and dedication. She was a loving mother to her daughters, Glenda Anthony and Nancy Douglas, and her son, Randall Greene (Valerie). Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren, Meredith Greene, Nathan Douglas (Summer), Grant Douglas, Kate Greene, Andrew Johnson and Kara Johnson, and her great-grandchildren, Lucas Greene, Miles Douglas and McKenna Douglas. Betty’s loved stepdaughter, Robin Johnson, provided care for her for several years. Her close friend Shirley George was a constant source of joy and companionship for more than 30 years.
Educated at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Florida, Betty later earned her GED certificate, demonstrating her commitment to learning and personal growth. Her exceptional intelligence was recognized by her membership in Mensa International, the high-IQ society. Betty’s childhood was spent helping her mother operate restaurants in Naples and LaBelle, Florida, during World War II. She created memorable dishes like her famed “Betty Ruth soup”.
As an adult, Betty embarked upon a successful career in the mortgage industry, opening branches nationwide for Centrust Mortgage and Charter Mortgage. Her leadership skills and dedication were further evidenced by executive positions at Florida National Bank.
A woman of strong faith, Betty was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cocoa for more than 30 years. She found joy and purpose in her membership in the ESA Sorority, which passionately supported St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital—a cause close to her heart.
Throughout her life, Betty embraced adventure and discovery. She and her husband Bill traveled the world, creating memories on international trips and cruises, including a remarkable journey on Queen Elizabeth II, which included a Concorde flyover. Betty was also an avid Bridge player, enjoying the game for over a quarter of a century.
Betty’s personal qualities of strength, kindness and passion were evident in her love for her family, her community, and her Lord. Her pride in her heritage as a 5th Generation Florida Pioneer Descendant was a testament to her deep roots and enduring spirit.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Your Next Level ALF, Lifepath Hospice and Affinity Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion during Betty’s final days. Betty’s life was a blessing to all who knew her, and her memory will be cherished forever.
In honor of Betty’s generous nature and commitment to helping others, donations may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization she passionately supported.
