Born on January 8, 1945, in Kissimmee, Florida, he lived a life defined by service, integrity, and deep love for his family.
Irving was a proud graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1967. While at Virginia Tech, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and a saxophonist in the Highty-Tighties Regimental Band, reflecting both discipline and a lifelong love of music.
Commissioned into the United States Air Force, Irving embarked on a remarkable 30-year career from 1968 to 1998. A command pilot with more than 6,000 flying hours across more than 30 aircraft types, he accumulated over 600 combat hours and served with distinction in both the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.
In 1977, Irving married Sandra Rose DuPont, the love of his life and his steadfast partner for more than five decades. Together they built a warm and supportive home, raising three children—Christine, Benjamin, and Teresa—and later celebrating the joy of becoming grandparents to their beloved grandson, Xavier.
Irving remained an active and respected figure in the military aviation community throughout his life. He was a dedicated member of the Valiant Air Command, the Quiet Birdmen, and the Order of Daedalians, often taking on leadership roles and forming lifelong friendships. He also enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, and cheering on his favorite football teams—pursuits that brought him camaraderie and countless memorable moments.
Known to different circles as Bob, Boge or Butch, Irving will be remembered for his steady presence, sharp wit, and generous spirit. He had a remarkable ability to make others feel valued, whether sharing flying stories or offering guidance to younger generations.
Irving is preceded in death by his sister, Betty. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Christine, Benjamin (and his wife Christine), and Teresa (and her husband William); his sister, Beverly (and her husband Braxton); his grandson, Xavier; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and lifelong friends.
Services will be held at The Life Event Center, 5950 S. US Highway 1 in Rockledge, FL, on Saturday, February 21st at 3PM. Visitation will begin one hour prior at 2PM.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery is anticipated.
