Bobby Jean Register, 91, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on December 13, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, and two great-granddaughters. Bobby was many things to many people, but he was a true hero to his wife and family. He lived a wonderful life, rising from an extremely modest upbringing to a life overflowing with love and accomplishments.
Bobby was born on July 6, 1934, along with his twin brother, Billy Dean Register, to parents A.D. and Ivy Register. They were born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida, along with five additional siblings: Evelyn, Levon, Gaines, Marjorie, and Glen. Born during the Great Depression, Bobby and his large family faced many challenges. While they did not have many material possessions, their home was rich in love and faith, and a strong Christian foundation was instilled in Bobby from an early age.
He attended grade school at Sealey Memorial and graduated from Leon High School in 1952. Bobby was a standout basketball player and earned All-North East Conference honors during his senior year. After graduation, Bobby, his twin brother, and his best friend enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve their country. He also viewed this opportunity as a pathway to attend college after completing his service.
Following basic training, Bobby was stationed at Monterey Naval Air Station, where he served his entire enlistment. He often said he thanked God for that assignment, as it led him to meet a beautiful young woman named Rosa Lea Edgin at a church in Pacific Grove, California. Their first date was on February 7, 1953, and were married on July 7, 1955—just two days after Bobby completed his military service. He liked to joke that he needed another driver for the cross-country trip back to Tallahassee.
Bobby and Rosa Lea shared a loving marriage that spanned more than 70 years—a true love built on faith, respect, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Their devotion to one another was evident to everyone who knew them, and they were rarely apart. They told each other “I love you” multiple times throughout each day. They were true partners in every sense, each contributing in their own way to ensure their family was always cared for and surrounded by love. Together, they built a strong and joyful home from two devoted hearts and their love grew stronger with every year of marriage.
They shared a life filled with laughter and fun, traveling together, enjoying one another’s company, and opening their home to host countless gatherings and celebrations with family and friends. In Bobby’s later years, Rosa Lea never left his side and was with him when he passed, a final reflection of the deep bond they shared. Together, they raised four children: Bobby Jr., Linda, Lea Ann (Harry), and Becky (Mike). Bobby loved each of his children “more than anything” and expressed his love every time he saw his children. He was immensely proud of all four of his children. He was an exceptional Daddy and a dedicated provider, and the love he and Rosa Lea poured into their family continues through generations.
Their family continued to grow with the addition of nine grandchildren and their spouses and partners: Bobby III (Christy), Trina (Ryan), Brandon (Tiffany), Chris (Arianni), Jackie (Paul), Ricky, Kristina (Justin), Jamie (Charles), and Jodie (Trent). Bobby’s joy multiplied again with the arrival of fourteen great-grandchildren: Brenden, Bryden, Maci, Shelby, Emmy, Wesley, Wyatt, Gaines, Mason, Grady, Aiden, Grant, Grace, and Charlie. He also dearly loved his many nieces, nephews, and “bonus” children.
After completing his military service, Bobby attended Florida State University, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. This strong academic foundation launched a distinguished career in the aerospace industry. He began his career with Philco but was soon drawn to the NASA Moon Program and was hired by the Chrysler Corporation to work in Florida. In 1962, Bobby and Rosa Lea, along with their first two children, made their final cross-country move to Melbourne, Florida, where he would live for the next 63 years.
Shortly after relocating, Bobby was hired by NASA, where he proudly served his country once again as a civil servant until his retirement in 1991. His career was defined by hard work, dedication, and integrity. He earned numerous awards and played an important role in advancing America’s space exploration efforts. He supported the entire Apollo-Saturn Program and contributed to the Space Shuttle Program from its inception through 40 missions. Known for his remarkable work ethic and deep knowledge, Bobby was someone who could—and would—accomplish anything. He offered wise counsel and became a role model to many.
In retirement, Bobby enjoyed traveling across the country with his wife, family, and friends. He loved America and its natural beauty. He was passionate about sports, especially FSU athletics, and enjoyed playing basketball, fishing, dancing, and listening to country music. Above all, Bobby loved God. In his final days, he gave thanks for his life and made sure to express his love to the Lord.
Bobby lived a long and wonderful life, and to know him was truly to love him. He would help anyone without hesitation, embodying the strength, kindness, and high morals of a true Southern gentleman from humble beginnings. His unmistakable Southern drawl announced his presence the moment he spoke, instantly putting people at ease. Bobby had a gift for making others feel comfortable, and his sense of humor was unmatched—one that stayed with him until the very end, still bringing laughter when it was needed most. He will be greatly missed, and the truth is, they simply don’t make men like Bobby Jean Register anymore. He was one of a kind and will always be our hero.
