Christel Rose Horsch, 71, passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2012 in Viera, FL. She was born on September 14, 1941 in Canby, Oregon. Chris married John 52 years ago, on Sept 24, 1960, in Jackson Hole, WY, by a Justice of the Peace, and later at the Catholic Church in Pinedale, WY. She has two children, John David and Cathy; and three grandchildren
Chris met John when he was assigned to Pinedale with AFTAC (Air Force Technical Applications Center) ... they first met at the local 'Club Cafe' where Chris served for a short time. They teased and flirted back and forth and fell in love for life. Son John was born in Pinedale's small clinic Dec, 1961.
From Pinedale they had a tour to Ankara, Turkey (1963-65), where Daughter Catherine was born in the Military Hospital in Oct, 1964. From there they were assigned to the Washington, DC area from 1965 to 1971. In July 1971 Chris returned to Pinedale for one year to assist her family with several medical challenges while John was on a remote assignment to Wonju, Korea; they then returned to the DC area.
Chris came to Patrick in 1970 when AFTAC was relocated from the DC area, served several years and then were off to Weisbaden, Germany. Following that they returned to Patrick. John, and Chris had been selected to represent the Command, and the Commander, at the highest enlisted position. Following retirement in 1987, Chris was co-editor of the AFTAC Alumni Newsletter, Post-Monitor, and became well known to the active-duty, and retired, in that position. During her life Chris worked at several vocations. Beginning the year they were married she worked at a Pinedale Insurance/Realtor office to supplement their income and help buy their first home, an 8 X 45 'trailer house,' until most recently when she was selected as a Census Taker Manager for a portion of Brevard County.
Chris was a dedicated mother and the ultimate homemaker, around that she found the time to be very active with her children’s activities including: PTA, Boy Scout Leader, “Team Mom," and at various times and locations she volunteered at military hospitals and the base family support centers.
Chris had a great sense of humor and enjoyed decorating, hostessing, puzzles, reading, crafts, travel and had an excellent 'Green Thumb.'
Over the years Chris had an ongoing battle with various cancers – first with breast, followed by colon and bladder cancers. During the last three it has been lung cancer, first the right side then the left and finally this year, in the center area. Throughout these times of challenge, her strong faith, strength and will pulled the family together. Although the ill one, she was the comforter to the family assuring them everything would be alright.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 5-7pm at Florida Memorial Funeral Home, with a funeral mass on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 10am at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
