

Born in Vulcan, West Virginia, Stumpy was the son of the late Clifford and Hazel Simpson and the grandson of the late Jessie and Virgie Mounts. He proudly served his country for six years in the Army National Guard before moving to Merritt Island, Florida, where he built a life for his family. In 1962, he began his career with GSA at the Kennedy Space Center, where he dedicated many years of hard work and service.
Stumpy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Billie Jean Simpson; his son, Ron Simpson; his grandson, Ricky Simpson; his great-grandsons, Garrett Simpson and Ashton Simpson; his sisters, Penny Perchan and Ann Saulter; his parents, Clifford and Hazel Simpson; and his loving grandparents, Jessie and Virgie Mounts.
He is survived by his devoted children: son Cliff Simpson Jr. (Tammy) of Merritt Island, Florida; son Richard Simpson of Merritt Island, Florida; daughter Vivian Ross (Bobby) of Inez, Kentucky; and stepson David Goff (Melanie) of Lakeland, Florida. He is also survived by his sister, Dixie Harvey of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; his brothers, Charles Simpson of Detroit, Michigan, Gary (Gloria) Mounts of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Teddy Varney of Summerville, South Carolina; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Stumpy was an avid member of the Merritt Island and Cocoa Moose Lodges, where he enjoyed the fellowship of many lifelong friends. He loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing, trying his luck gambling and playing Bingo, and cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He was also actively involved in coaching his children in Little League baseball and football, creating memories they would treasure for a lifetime. Above all else, Stumpy treasured the time he spent with his family. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by those he loved.
Known for his quick wit, warm smile, and love of telling stories, Stumpy never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel like family. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family, hardworking spirit, generous heart, and the countless memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of love, loyalty, laughter, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Stumpy's life will be held at The Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, located at 5950 S US Hwy 1, Rockledge, FL 32955, on Monday, July 6, 2026. Visitation will begin at 1:30 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM.
