Daniel Walker Becton, age 77, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Melbourne, Florida. Dan will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Patricia, and his daughter, Danielle Pepen. He was a cherished stepfather to David and Michael Matuskey and a beloved “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren, Lilyanne, Dane, Maxwell, and Ethan.
Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Dan was the eldest son of the late Albert and Sarah Becton. He was a protective and loving older brother to Frank, Mitch, and Pauline Gregory and a proud uncle “Danny” to his nieces and nephew, McLean, Kathryn and Peyton.
Dan dedicated his life to service and education. He earned his bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University, where he also shared his artistic talents as a cartoonist for the student newspaper. He went on to receive his master’s degree in psychology from the University of New Mexico in 1975. After serving his country with honor in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, he continued his education, earning a doctorate in school psychology from the University of Florida in 1982.
He began his professional career working with students with disabilities at Central Florida Community College, where his compassion and dedication laid the foundation for a lifetime of advocacy and educational leadership. Dan later served as the Director of Special Student Education for both Flagler and Clay County Schools for more than 35 years. His leadership and unwavering commitment transformed lives for generations of students and families.
In addition to his contributions to education, Dan was also a gifted artist and cartoonist, known for his quick wit, clever illustrations, and joyful humor. His cartoons captured the world around him with warmth and insight, and his sense of humor brought laughter to many throughout his life.
Above all, Dan cherished his family. He found his greatest joy in being “Pop Pop” to his grandchildren, and his love for them—and for all his family—was boundless.
Dan’s legacy of kindness, leadership, and love will be felt for generations. He will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
A visitation for Dan will be held Sunday, June 8, 2025 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Daniel's memory may be made to St. Francis Hospice, https://reflectionslsc.org/.
