David Benjamin Schreiber, 73, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at a hospice facility in Titusville, Florida.
Born in New York City on October 14, 1952, David lived a life marked by curiosity, intellect, and kindness. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UCLA and went on to serve as a Biochemistry Patent Research Examiner for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C. He retired in 2007 and relocated to Brevard County, Florida, where he continued to live a life filled with purpose and connection.
David was married for many years to his beloved wife, Vera Da Silva, who preceded him in death two years ago. Though they had no children, their marriage was filled with love, shared adventures, and deep family ties that extended across continents.
He is survived by his sister, Sally Schreiber, brother-in-law Larry Balick, and nephews Tobias Balick Schreiber ( Sara Martin) and Blake Balick Schreiber (Megan Yee). Tobias and Sara are parents to David’s cherished great-niece and great-nephew, Riley and Ryan. He is also lovingly remembered by several nieces and nephews through Vera’s family in Brazil.
David loved to travel and spent several months exploring Europe after high school, a journey that sparked a lifelong passion for other cultures and languages, especially Portuguese. Deeply connected to his wife’s family, he frequently traveled to Brazil and embraced their heritage as his own. He also enjoyed genealogy, spending many hours tracing family roots and reaching out to distant relatives.
Music was another great joy in David’s life; his extensive record collection was a source of comfort and nostalgia. Known for his intelligence, gentle humor, and warmth, David made friends wherever he went, including at the assisted living communities he called home in his later years, where many affectionately knew him as “Doctor Dave.”
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s memory to one of the organizations he cared deeply about: the Alzheimer’s Association, Catholic Charities, UNICEF, ASPCA, Greyhound Pets of America, the ACLU, or HIAS.
David’s life was one of compassion, curiosity, and connection. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
