David F. Shuford passed away on Friday, September the 18, 2020 in Melbourne, Florida. Dave was born in Swannanoa, NC in April of 1932 to parents Oliver and Ruby Shurford. He is survived by his wife Mary Alice Shuford.
Dave was a graduate of Western Carolina in Cullowhee, NC where he met his wife Mary Alice. Married in December of 1956, they celebrated 64 years of marriage. After their wedding, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee and Dave earned his Doctorate of Education. Shortly after graduation he joined the army and this sweet little couple from North Carolina flew off to Heidelberg, Germany to start a new life. Here in Europe is where their passion began for traveling throughout the world.
After leaving Europe they moved to Hollywood, Florida where Dave accepted the position as Dean of Student Services at Miami Dade College. His position at the college influenced countless young adults and ensured that they met their potential as he was instrumental in developing students' leadership skills and encouraging them to reach for the stars!
They both fell in love with the ocean and everything saltwater. Dave loved to fish and he was an avid angler. He was eager to tell of his day on the ocean and you could bet he had a fish tail or two to share. He encouraged his extended family to love the deep sea fishing lifestyle! As a gourmet cook, he often brought the catch home to be grilled and served with the most tasty vegetables.
Years later, he was recruited by Pima Community College in Tucson, AZ . After several visits out west, Mary and Dave were off to another adventure. This time it was the wild, wild west. Dave served in the office of Vice President at the Community College and always pushed everyone he knew to go the route of the Community College, He was a brilliant leader and lover of education. He helped as many students, friends and family as would listen. He was a major financial supporter of the United Way and the Red Cross.
In 1983, Dave was awarded "Citizen of the Year" by the Tucson Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure at Pima Community College in Tucson, he was the Rodeo Chairman in Tucson for four years and I think this is where his love for the cowboy boots started. At one time he boasted 13 pairs of boots!
When Dave and Mary decided to retire they moved back to Florida in the Melbourne area. A major consideration was to be close to his mother-in- law and the rest of his North Carolina family. They enjoyed travelling in their motorhome as much as possible and took as many people that could go and enjoy this new found love of exploring and traveling in the states.
Dave had a heart of gold. There was never anyone that needed help that he refused. Whether it was just to listen, to give advice, or encourage one to do his/her best. He lived life to the fullest. He dearly loved his wife and family. He always pushed everyone to be their best and to exceed their goals. He was an exemplary father figure although he didn't have children of his own, the love he had for his nieces and nephews is felt today. Dave had a strong Christian faith and we know he is having a good time with his family and friends in heaven. You will surely be missed Dave!
The funeral will take place at Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, Saturday, September 26, 2020, 5950 US-1S, Rockledge, FL. Viewing will be at 2pm, and the service will begin at 3pm. All are welcomed to celebrate his life.
