Mrs. Ernestine S. Price
July 2, 1922 – November 28, 2018
Ernestine S. Price, 96, died at her home in Rockledge, FL on November 28, 2018. She was born on July 2, 1922 in Thomasville, Georgia, and was the daughter of Herbert Denson Shepherd and Bertha Kate Parramore Shepherd. Ernestine was the second oldest of four siblings who grew up in Thomasville and graduated from Thomasville High School. After graduation, she began working in town at the Harris Electric Co. and the Sears Roebuck Co. Thomasville was a close-knit town where most all the farming and townspeople knew one another. The community was filled with family, friends, and neighbors helping each other as the Great Depression and World War II unfolded. It was During World War II that Ernestine met her future husband, 1st Lieutenant, Albert E. Price, United States Army Corps of Engineers stateside at the Veterans hospital while he was recovering from injuries sustained in France. Members of the community would often visit the Veterans hospital where injured servicemen were sent to recover from their injuries sustained in the European conflict. Mr. Price remained at the hospital during an extended recovery period where Ernestine would visit him and he would later meet members of her family and eat dinners at her family’s home on many occasions. They were married in the Methodist church in Thomasville, Ga. on Sunday September 30, 1945 and embarked on a life long “tour” of the United States, moving more than thirty times from coast to coast as her husband completed his college classes and pursued a career as a Professor and Aerospace Engineer. Ernestine would establish new homes each time she and Albert relocated. After living in Blacksburg, Virginia; Long Island, New York; Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Seattle, Washington; New Orleans, Louisiana; Huntsville, Alabama; and Fairfax, Virginia they settled in Cocoa Beach, Florida in 1966 with their three sons. There, Ernestine established and maintained a family canal front pool home. Her eldest son began working at the nearby Publix supermarket and her younger sons would water ski, surf and play at the beach. Ernestine enjoyed decorating her home with seasonal decorations for each and every holiday. She would always bake cookies, prepare holiday dinners and decorate the home from room to room. She and her youngest son would color Easter eggs during the Easter holiday, and they would continue doing so until he was well into his twenties. During her thirty-five years in Cocoa Beach she joined the Women’s Garden Club, and was employed by City Gas Co. and the Brevard County School Board. Ernestine had a green thumb, and would grow plants all around the yard along with a porch full of green and variegated plants and flowers. Ernestine and Al continued to travel throughout their sixty-year marriage, including eight trips to many locations in Europe and Northern Africa. Her final move was from Cocoa Beach to Rockledge, FL to a new inland home where she continued to grow her plants and flowers well into her 90’s.
Ernestine was a beautiful southern lady, full of grace, a Georgia peach, who considered her greatest blessings to be her family. Her family and home were her greatest joys. She was a devoted wife and mother who always offered a helping hand, a listening ear, and a southern home cooked meal. She will be remembered mostly for her love of her children, and her genuine concern and unconditional love will be sadly missed.
Sometime after her 96th birthday, Ernestine remarked that she had had a long, interesting, wonderful and varied life.
Ernestine was predeceased by her husband Albert E. Price; her sister Margaret Shepherd Booker; brothers Carol Walker Shepherd and Herbert (Bobby) Shepherd. Ernestine is survived by her three sons: Edward W. Price, William D. Price, Gregory L. Price and their wives, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 1-2 pm followed by a funeral and graveside service beginning immediately afterwards on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Dignity Memorial Life Event Center at Florida Memorial, 5950 South U.S. Hwy.1, Rockledge, FL.
