Glenda was born on January 9, 1943 to Pete and Annie Owens in Sylacauga, Alabama. She immediately brought joy and laughter into the world. She was a doting sister to her younger brother Joe Owens, whom she loved fiercely. She graduated from B.B. Comer High School in 1961 After graduating from High School, Glenda went on to pursue a teaching degree at Jacksonville State University and The University of Alabama. She married and started a family before she completed her degree, and remained a passionate and dedicated Alabama fan for the rest of her years. Roll Tide! She finally finished her much coveted college degree at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland in 2000.
Glenda met the love of her life, Billy C. Tankersley in High School. They were married on August 15, 1961 and were inseparable from that point on. Glenda and Bill were married for 38 years. They were separated by his passing in 1999. They had three children, Laura, Anne and John.
Glenda was a dedicated mother to her children, raising them to go on and accomplish great things. Family always came first. She leaves an impossible hole to fill. She enjoyed her children’ numerous activities throughout their childhood and was always willing to help and volunteer.
Glenda had a great love for education and teaching. She taught at Dr. W. J. Creel Elementary for more than 50 years. Her love was for reading literacy and she was a Reading Specialist for many of her teaching years. She spearheaded Creel’s “Annual Thanksgiving Basket Program” for many years. Her ties with community businesses and leaders provided many overflowing food baskets to many families. She continued this program work even in her retirement.
Serving others was her great calling and passion. She spent many years teaching fifth and sixth grade Sunday School, and was dedicated to her beloved Harbor City Baptist Church, and in her later years, South Patrick Baptist’s Hospitality Committees. She had a special love for serving our elderly church and community members. She also had a successful 10 year stint as a Brownie Troop Leader where she bravely endured many overnight campouts! If there was a need, she never hesitated to step right in and fill it. Her love and compassion for others is her great legacy.
She was an enthusiastic volunteer for the many hundreds of school and sporting events that her children participated in, and was always first in line to host a group of kids at her house for a cookout. She played hostess while Bill ran the grill. It’s likely she baked over two trillion batches of brownies, cookies, cupcakes and her world famous Marzetti during this time. Marzetti recipe available upon request!
In later years, she was fortunate to find love again with Mr. David Stallard. The two married on September 11, 2011. Our family was blessed to welcome new step siblings, David Stallard Jr., Thomas Stallard, and Kimberly Stallard D’Ippolito and their families. We are blessed to still count them as family.
Glenda was predeceased by her parents Pete and Annie Owens, her husband Bill Tankersley, her brother Joe Owens, and second husband David Stallard.
She is survived by her children Laura Lupinacci (Mike), Anne Worbington (Vince), and John (Sonia), her grandchildren Sam Lupinacci, Isabelle Lupinacci, Max Lupinacci, Grady Worbington, Briggs Worbington, Kaitlyn Driscoll, Dillon Driscoll, and Abigail Tankersley, her beloved sister in law Gloria Owens, brother in law Randy Tankersley and wife Johnnie, and their children and grandchildren.
