

(Ret) Lt. Col. Guy (Hap) E. Smith passed away June 22, 2012 as a result of a massive stroke. He was 90 years old. Hap was predeceased by his wife Martie, his grandson Wesley and his great-granddaughter Blake. He was born in Ellettsville, Indiana on Oct. 12, 1921 and was 1 of 13 children. The 5 surviving siblings are Rita, Bob, Peg, Norm and George. He is also survived by his two sons, Don (Carol) Smith and Mike (Terry) Smith and one daughter Lynn Parenteau. He has 6 grandchildren, Charlene (Don) Rose, Sean (Kelli) Smith, Carmen (Jason) Smith, Jon (Tracee) Smith, Jimmy Smith and Bill (Trina) Armistead and 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Hap served in the Air Force for 28 years as a pilot. He flew in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War earning several distinguished medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. He attended Eastern New Mexico University on a basketball scholarship and graduated with a Master’s Degree. His love for basketball continued throughout his life. He was coaching, playing or watching basketball. He was dribbling that ball just a week before he passed and never missed a game on the TV. There will be a visitation from 9-10:30am on Wednesday, July 11 at Florida Memorial Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 11am at Florida Memorial Gardens.
