

James Newton, Jr., age 72 of LaVergne, TN passed away Saturday, September 13, 2025. He was born in Savannah, GA to the late James Newton, Sr. and Laura Catherine Robinson. He was preceded in death by his wife Susie A. Newton of 37 years; sisters Cynthia Williams, Orian Williams, and Denise Campbell.
He is survived by his son James A. Newton III (Jodie) and grandson Malakai Newton of Murfreesboro, TN; sisters Catherine Williams of Charlotte, NC and Calanthia Williams of Titusville, FL; brothers Dennis Williams of Charlotte, NC, Lorenzo Williams of Palm Bay, FL and Freddie Taylor of Melbourne, FL; as well as numerous beloved close military friends, cousins, and extended family.
SGM Newton served for over 22 years in the United States Army with a primary specialty as a 14Z5M Air Defense Artillery Senior Sergeant. His last duty assignment and major command was as a USA 2nd Region ROTC Cadet Command where he taught ROTC at Vanderbilt University and JROTC at Antioch High School.
His decorations, medals, badges, citations and campaign ribbons included: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (8th Award), Valorous Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Southwest Asia Service Medal (2 Bronze Stars), Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon (Senior Level), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Kuwait Liberation Medal (SA), Kuwait Liberation Medal (KU), M16 Rifle Expert Qualification Badge, and German Military Sportsman Performance Badge.
SGM Newton had a deep love for his family and friends, often traveling just to spend meaningful time with them. In his younger years, he developed a passion for Taekwondo, earning his black belt and later becoming an instructor, a role he cherished. He also had a lifelong fascination with cars—especially Corvettes—and loved sharing that interest with his son and grandson, often bonding over conversations about car shows. A devoted Florida Gators fan, he never missed a chance to cheer them on. Those who knew him will fondly remember his sharp sense of humor, captivating storytelling, and unwavering compassion. His presence brought warmth, laughter, and love to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation will be held on October, 8, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with funeral service beginning at 11:00 am at Florida Memorial, 5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida. Military Honors Graveside service to follow at 12:00 PM in Florida Memorial Gardens.
