Jim graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked in the aerospace industry for more than 30 years, having worked for Boeing and Hughes Aircraft before joining Rockwell International at the beginning of the Space Shuttle Program. He was Supervisor of the Auxiliary Power Unit section during the Orbiter Approach and Landing phase of the Shuttle Program at Dryden Flight Research Center. He moved to Florida to work at the Kennedy Space Center with Rockwell and became the head of the Orbiter Test Conductor Office. He transitioned to Lockheed Aerospace then United Space Alliance and retired in 1999 as the Director of Test and Documentation Management.
He is survived by, Cindy Sullivan, his wife of 39 years; daughters Laura Sullivan, Amy Grove and her husband Mark, Michelle Clontz and his granddaughter Sarah Grove. He was preceded in death by grandchildren Monica Clontz and Christopher Grove. Jill Jones of Bartow, Florida, is the mother of his daughters.
There will be an informal Celebration of Life for "Sulli" held at the Merritt Island Moose Lodge on Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 1-5pm
