At the age of seventeen, John joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he proudly served for five years. His training in radar technology became the foundation of a long and successful career with RCA, and later GE, where his expertise helped shape the early days of the space race. Among his many accomplishments, John played a key role in designing, building, and installing the camera used on Ranger 7, the 1964 mission that captured the first close-up photographs of the moon—images that paved the way for the Apollo landings.
John’s career took him across the globe, from New Jersey and California to South Florida, England, Greenland, Trinidad, and Japan—each destination marking another chapter in a life defined by curiosity, dedication, and discovery.
In 1957, John married Barbara, and together they had two daughters, Wendy and Susan. He was a devoted father, proud grandfather to Brittany and Kristi, and doting great-grandfather to Finn Patrick, who brought him immense joy in his later years.
In 1987, John married Terry, and together they attended a Christian ministry school in New Zealand, where they met Pastor Tim Franklin of Freedom Christian Center in Florida. Their shared faith became the cornerstone of a beautiful journey of ministry and service. After moving to Florida, John and Terry became cherished members of the Freedom Christian Center community.
Following Terry’s passing in 2005, she was survived by her son, Bill Fortney, his wife, Darlene, and their children, Anthony, Kevin, and Loren—all of whom held a special place in John’s heart.
In 2006, John married Janice, with whom he shared many blessed years. Together, they continued their faithful involvement at Freedom Christian Center, serving their community and deepening their walk with the Lord. Over the years John served in maintenance, security and was a director of the Discipleship Ministry for Freedom Christian Center.
John’s life was marked by wonder, service, a robust sense of humor and steadfast faith. He will be remembered for his warm spirit, brilliant mind, and unwavering devotion to God and family.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at Freedom Christian Center on November 1st, 2025 at 2:30 pm.
