Leo W. Preece, Jr.
Melbourne
Leo W. Preece, Jr., 85, of Melbourne, died July 2, 2011 after a long battle to overcome pneumonia.
He is survived by 3 children, Sherry Johnson, Richard Preece, and Lisa Ellis; 4 grandchildren, Cathryn, Anthony, Emma and Lee; and 3 great-grandchildren, Alexiz, Anthony and Markelle.
Mr. Preece was born in Canton, Ohio, moved to Erie, Pa. as a young boy, where he learned his father's trade as an oil, gas and air conditioning technician. In 1969 Mr. Preece followed his parents, Leo and Jean Preece, Sr., and moved to Florida initially living in Broward County then later settling in Brevard County.
When asked in 2009 what his greatest achievement was, Mr. Preece responded, "Having my own business, L.W. Preece Incorp. Heating and Air Conditioning." Mr. Preece was a master electrician, attaining a master's rating in refrigeration and was responsible for planning, installing, and servicing heating and air conditioning for major shopping centers, high rise condos, small local businesses and residences throughout and state.
His varied interests also led him to own and operate a beef cattle farm, a liming business and a hoagie shop. Mr. Preece had a passion for life and an appetite for learning. He could carry on long conversations related to politics, religion, health, financial, economic and international events.
He was a natural born teacher and his love of life showed in his eyes and in his smile. He was in his favorite element when he was around young people or people who needed his help. He loved playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and it was sometimes difficult to know which one of them was the kid.
Mr. Preece was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army Air Corps. His great joy was flying and he often remembered his days as an Army pilot. He loved adventure and wished to visit Alaska and New Zealand. No one could squeeze more value out of a dollar than him. He will be so dearly missed by his family and friends, who treasured him.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 10 from 11 am to 1 pm with funeral and burial following immediately after at 1 pm at Florida Memorial Gardens, Rockledge, 321-636-8943. Please come and celebrate his life with us.
