Michael Conrad Atwood

Michael Atwood, 79, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on August 30, 2026. Michael lived a life defined by service, discipline, hard work, and devotion to those he loved.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Virginia “Ginger” Atwood of Vero Beach, Florida; his daughter-in-law, Andrea Atwood; his grandson, Bryton Shawn Atwood; his granddaughter, Kadence Renee Atwood; his stepson, Ryan Gragg and wife Antigone Gragg; his stepdaughter, Alexis Gragg; his brother, Tim Atwood and wife, DeNeille Atwood; his nephew, Ryan Atwood and wife Stephanie Atwood and great-niece, Alexandria Atwood; mother-in-law, Lynda Hodges; and brother-in-law, Corey Pike. Michael was preceded in death by his two sons, Michael Shawn Atwood and Brigadier General Chandler Parrish Atwood; and by his parents, Virgil Atwood and Stella Atwood.

Special gratitude is extended to the Vitas Healthcare team, Inpatient Hospice, and Blue Fountain ALF in Brevard County for the excellent care they provided Michael. Their devotion to his care and comfort, communication with family, and compassion were exceptional.

A graduate of East Carolina University, Class of 1968, Michael was drafted by the United States Army following graduation. Choosing instead to forge his own path of military service, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He completed Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia and went on to become a Marine Corps Aviator, serving his country with honor and distinction. Following his military service, Michael began a successful career as a General Contractor. Over the course of many years, Mike Atwood Builders built hundreds of homes for families throughout North Carolina and later in Vero Beach with Croom Construction Company. His work reflected the same integrity, determination, and attention to detail that had guided him throughout his life. Michael left a meaningful and lasting mark on the communities he served.

Michael will be remembered as a proud Marine, a skilled builder, a devoted husband, and father, and a man whose quiet strength of character touched the lives of those who knew him. The funeral service will take place at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2365 Pine Ave, Vero Beach, Florida on Saturday, September 26 at 10:00 a.m.
