Patrick G. Barnhardt

Patrick G. “Pat” Barnhardt passed away in his home on January 8, 2021, in Melbourne, Florida. Pat was born on February 22, 1939, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Charles Wesley and Grace Lillian (Popps) Barnhardt. His family was large, him being the 6th child, one of the youngest alongside his twin sister Patricia Barnhardt. He attended school at Angel Grade School, Laketon Central Junior High, and North Muskegon High School, graduating in June 1948. He then attended Muskegon Community College until April 1959.
After this, he worked in a service station until he decided to enlist in the United States Air Force in December 1959. He soon began his basic training, completing it at the Amarillo AFB in where he also attended technical training to become an Aircraft Mechanic. His first tour took him to many places, finally ending in Okinawa in November 1961.
His next tour began when he was transferred to the Republic of Vietnam in April 1965. During this tour, he had the responsibility of being the mechanic on ammunition convoys with his primary duty to move ammunition to forward battle positions and sites. The vehicles were often under fire from Viet Cong guerillas.
Upon the completion of his second tour, Pat was transferred to Patrick AFB, Florida. It was there he met his future wife, Claire. They were married in February 1970. Following his marriage, Pat was moved around, being transferred to many different locations and finally retiring from military service as a Technical Sergeant in December 1979 at Homestead AFB, Florida.
After the close of his military career, he moved back with his family where he resided in Indian Harbor Beach, Florida. He spent several years employed by the Brevard County School Board as a heavy-duty mechanic. Pat retired from his position on disability which was effective in 1987.
Pat was preceded in death by his loving wife Claire Barnhardt; son Kevin Rochefort; daughter Lorraine Rochefort; twin sister Patricia Barnhardt; brothers Darrell Barnhardt, Dale Barnhardt, and Ronald Barnhardt; and oldest grandson Eugene Hodson.
Pat was survived by his daughters Irene Hodson, RuthAnn Costa, and sons Anthony Rochefort and Frederick Barnhardt; brother Larry Barnhardt; grandchildren Jennifer Hodson, Greggory and Lauren Rochefort, Kirstin Kovary, Charlene Hawkinson, and Shawn Ash, Patrick Barnhardt, and Kyle Barnhardt.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, at Florida Memorial Gardens (5950 South US Highway 1, Rockledge, FL 32955).
