

He was born January 30, 1932 in Grand Junction, Iowa to Jack and Pauline Greene. He enjoyed sports and was a star baseball player in high school while also working as a farm hand. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served as a Boatswain’s Mate for six years. After his honorable military service, he worked as a civil servant as a Mail Handler for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years. He retired from the Postal Service in 1989 and moved from Urbandale, Iowa to Melbourne, Florida in Brevard County. He also spent time in Indian River County in Vero Beach, Florida. In 2016, he moved to Springfield, Virginia to be closer to his son and his family.
Richard is survived by his son, Larry and daughter-in-law Joy Greene of Woodbridge, Virginia, grandson Dylan Greene of Chantilly, Virginia, and grandson Andrew Greene of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by his younger sister Phyllis Ashcraft of Jefferson, Iowa. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Irene Hidlebaugh Greene, and his brothers John Jr., Jim, Gene, and Darrell Greene.
He will be interned next to his beloved wife, Irene in a service held at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Florida at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 24. The U.S. Navy will render military honors.
