Samuel Cruz, lovingly known as “Sam,” passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, in Rockledge, Florida, at the age of 65. Though our hearts are heavy, we celebrate a life filled with faith, laughter, music, service, and love.
Born on May 2, 1961, in East Chicago, Indiana, to Francisco and Carmen Cruz, Sam grew up in Gary, Indiana alongside his many siblings. From an early age, he dreamed bigger than the steel mills around him and pursued a path of purpose, determination, and growth. After earning his GED from Horace Mann High School in 1980, he moved with his family to Puerto Rico, where he soon began what would become an honorable 21-year career in the United States Army.
In 1981, Sam enlisted in the U.S. Army in San Juan, Puerto Rico, serving as a Personnel Administration Specialist. His military journey took him around the world, including tours in Korea and Germany, and through it all he carried himself with dignity, discipline, and quiet strength. He retired in 2002 with the rank of Master Sergeant, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to his country.
Retirement from the military did not slow him down one bit. Sam continued serving others for another 20 years at Patrick Air Force Base, working at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) as an EEO Specialist before retiring in 2022. Education was always important to him, and he proudly earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000 and a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management in 2013.
But to truly know Sam was to know his smile, his humor, and his unforgettable personality. He had a quick wit and could make almost anyone laugh with perfectly timed jokes and playful comments. He loved music deeply and could often be found playing the congas, bongos, bass, guitar, or piano. Whether it was worship music at church or simply enjoying a jam session, music brought him joy that he loved sharing with others.
Sam also had a few legendary hobbies. He was fiercely competitive during domino games—always ready with a loud “Capicú!” after a winning round. Saturday night boxing matches were a must-watch event, and no one ever left one of his cookouts hungry. He proudly collected Spider-Man memorabilia and classic cars like a kid at heart and stayed committed to the gym, maintaining a physique that many people half his age envied.
Above all, Sam loved God. He faithfully served at his church, La Novia del Cordero, as a musician and occasionally led Bible studies and shared his testimony. His mornings were often spent in prayer and studying Scripture, a daily routine that reflected the quiet depth of his faith.
Sam will be deeply missed and forever cherished by his beloved wife of 42 years, Irma; his children, Janirys Canizares (David) and Joel Martinez; and his treasured grandchildren, Jazmyn and Andres, who lovingly called him “Welo.” He is also survived by his brothers Alfred Cruz (Sandra), Gamaliel Cruz, David Cruz (Nikki), Isaac Cruz, and Carlos Cruz (Liza), along with many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Francisco and Carmen Cruz; his sister Margaret Morales (Ruben); and his brothers Pedro Cruz “Papote,” Francisco Cruz Jr. “Papo” (Barbara), and Luis Cruz (Kim).
Though we grieve his passing, we rejoice knowing that Sam’s faith carried him home to be in the presence of our Lord and Savior. His laughter, wisdom, music, and love will continue to echo through the lives of everyone blessed to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, devotion, humor, and unwavering faith that will never be forgotten.
Friends and family will be received for the viewing and service at Life Event Center of Florida Memorial (5950 S US Hwy 1, Rockledge, FL 32955) on Monday, June 1, 2026 at 6:00 PM. The burial will follow at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery (5525 U.S. Highway 1, North Mims, FL 32754) on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 at 9:00 AM.
