

Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1950, Sam dedicated his life to service. He proudly served in the United States Army(1969-1972) and Air Force(1973-1975) before embarking on a 27-year career in the United States Coast Guard, where he retired honorably in 2002 as a Master Chief.
Sam is lovingly remembered by his wife, Amma; his children, Scott Smith and Kathleen “Kappy” Ross (and husband, Stan), Greg Schnell (and wife, Shannon) and Angie Rutherford (and husband, Matt); and his cherished grandchildren, JD (18), Luke (17), and Katie (16). He also leaves behind his twin brother, Steve; his brother, Dennis; and his sister, Shirley. Sam is predeceased by his parents, Joyce and Paul Sr., as well as his siblings, Paul Jr., Gary, and Cindy.
Sam and Amma moved to Florida in 2013, and made their home first in Viera and later in Rockledge, FL. An avid golfer, Sam enjoyed spending several days a week on the greens at the Manatee Cove Golf Course. A self-proclaimed “do it yourselfer,” there was nothing he couldn’t fix. His generosity and readiness to help enriched the lives of his family, friends, and community.
Sam’s life was defined by his service, warmth, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. He will forever be remembered and missed as a great husband, father, brother, Pop-pop, and friend. His legacy of kindness and resilience continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
