She was born in Rome, New York, in 1940 to Oscar and Marjorie Berning and moved to Brevard County at age 13, later graduating from Cocoa High School. She was a homemaker before joining the workforce at the Brevard County Tax Collector's Office. She retired from the Kennedy Space Center (Grumman/United Space Alliance) Operations Support Facility (OSF) in the library of tapes. She later became a sales director for Mary Kay and a fine jewelry sales associate at JCPenney. Sheila was a faithful Lutheran devoted to following Jesus. She was also an avid reader who enjoyed painting and playing piano and organ. She saw the beauty in everything and had a great sense of humor. Her greatest joy was her family and making home memories.
Sheila is survived by her husband, Jim Houle, of 38 years; four children, Debbie (Vance) White, Lisa (Rebecca Leeman) Cody, Teresa (Tom) DeSanto, David (Lynne) Cody; sister, Janice Kirkland; niece, Laurel (Nat Hetzer) Johns, nephew, Graham (Meg Watson) Kirkland, and great-niece, Louisa Kirkland; seven grandchildren, Christopher White, Cody White, Phillip DeSanto, Stephanie Cody, Audra Greuel, Abby (Brady) Amos, and Walker Cody; and, one great-grandson, Wyatt Amos. She is also survived by five stepchildren, Kim Jordan, Tim Houle, Karin Ellis, Tom Houle, and Kelli Floyd, and families and three stepchildren from a previous marriage, Bjorn (Maudie) Jiskoot, Danny Jiskoot, and Maggie Soderholm. She was loved by many.
A memorial service will be held on October 21, 2023, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Titusville at 1:30 p.m., with fellowship to follow. Donations may be made in her memory to Hospice of Health First or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Florida Memorial Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
