

Vernon McKinney, 89, of Satellite Beach, FL passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at his home with his family at his bedside. He is survived by his beloved daughter Rebecca (Lee) Dowden of Tampa; his cherished grandchildren, Dale (Maggie) Dowden of Tampa and Jillian Dowden of Chicago; his brother Paul Pettit of Georgia; and many other adored family and friends.
A native of Los Angeles, California, Vern enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and began a distinguished military career. While stationed at Montauk AFB, on Long Island NY, he met the love of his life and wife of 52 years, Claudette Flach, who passed in 2008. A proud American, Vern served his country for 30 years, ultimately rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. During his military career, he traveled extensively, spending 13 years in foreign service and visiting all 50 states. Upon retirement, Vern and his family settled in Satellite Beach where he eventually became the Director of Public Works for the city.
Vern appreciated a nice glass of Dewar’s blended scotch whiskey. He was an avid sports fan and a devoted golfer, who once proudly achieved a hole-in-one. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Vern’s love, advice and endless stories will be missed but shared with many for generations to come.
The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to Hospice of Health First for their caring and compassion in a most difficult time.
A private inurnment, with military honors, will occur at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in East Hampton, NY, where Vern’s final resting place will be next to his wife Claudia.
