Steve was sooo talented...and quick. As President of the National Honor Society at Montgomery Blair High he had the honor of giving a brief, canned speech at a school assembly inducting new members. At the end of the speech, he was to light a candle representing "leadership."  The match and the candle would not co-operate.  Tension built,  but he easily dispelled it when he said, "This candle is definitely not a leader." I'll always remember his grace under pressure and wicked humor.

Back in May 2010 Professor Goldberg joined us on the TV program Global Faith and Freedom.  We discussed themes that arose out of his book "Bleached Faith."  It was a great opportunity to discuss his book and his ideas.  Professor Goldberg was very convincing in his articulate presentation and calm demeanor.  It was obvious that he enjoyed the subject matter.  We recorded three one half hour shows.  Tragic is the loss of such a bright mind - and obviously a very caring person.  It was our privilege to have had him on our show.

Professor Goldberg, with his intellectual brilliance and curiosity (matched only by his sense of humor) was not simply the best and most effective of my GULC professors some 30 years ago.  He was also the only professor that, over the years, I kept in touch with and thought of as a mentor. Steve was extraordinarily generous with his time and interest in his former students.  I enjoyed many lunches with him on my return trips from California to DC over the years, and I always looked forward to hearing the latest words of wisdom (and wry commentary) from the man who, three decades later, was still my "favorite professor."   Although I disappointed him each time by being unable to report that I'd finally gotten married and had kids (a situation that, due to his own wonderful family, Steve fondly wished on everyone),  his genuine support and kind words for my legal and academic career were extremely meaningful to me over the years.   The world is a much poorer place without Steve Goldberg in it.  My deepest sympathies are with his family.

I met Steve and Mitsy before he began teaching at GULC. As a first year faculty person he was my supervisor for the group I shepherded through legal writing and research. That was in August of 1977. I have always remembered his opening remarks to me at the door of his apartment. " We are Irish, too, my family dropped the O' to avoid prejudice." The perfect thing to say to a young Jesuit who would work with him for the next year. He was a great man and as many have said his death a great loss for his wonderful family and the Georgetown community.

In junior high and high school Steve was the perfect student, yet could make gentle fun of every teacher we had, including Coach Meyers with his "sagging man-to-man defense." Never forget, Steve was a starting forward on the junior high b-ball team. Truly Steve did justly, and loved mercy and walked humbly with his God. Oh, to hear him quote the Prophet Micah one more time! Our love to Missy and the family.

I am a 1984 graduate of Georgetown Law School. Prof. Goldberg taught me Contracts in 1981. Almost 30 years later, he is the professor who stands out over the course of my education. He was a terrific educator and attorney. My sincere condolences to his family

as a teenager, he showed a true nobility of character and a devotion

I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Steve back in the early 1960's through Lincoln AZA, BBYO, in Silver Spring, Maryland.  He was just a great fellow, so bright yet so down to earth and relaxed.   I have not been in touch with him since.

His contributions were great and therefore his loss is all the more tragic.  I do not know any of his family, but my sincere sympathy goes out to all of them, as well as to his many friends.  I wish I could say something to lessen their pain, but I know that is impossible.  May his memory be a blessing.

I am a newcomer to the Georgetown Law Community, but had the great pleasure to receive classes with Prof. Goldberg this summer during the Foundations course for Foreign Lawyers. I just realize how much peace he inspired on me during this few sessions we had with him one month ago.

It's not every day in a student's education where he has a teacher who is both so expert in his knowledge and so brilliant a communicator that every single day of class is a pleasure and a privilege; Professor Steven Goldberg was exactly that. Although we were for the most part uncertain and frazzled during our first semester of law school, Professor Goldberg was the steady hand keeping us at ease.

There are so many great memories I have from that class: the times when he would regale us with stories from his law school days, the day after the 2008 election where he took a brief moment to put the prior day's events into historical perspective, and of course, the day he finally switched from the blue blazer he wore every day to a tweed jacket signaling the true beginning of the D.C. winter. Like his wardrobe, his passion for teaching and the adoration received from his students were constant.

I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have taken a class with him before he passed, and I am greatly saddened for the students now and in the future who will not have that same opportunity.

Professor Goldberg was beloved at Georgetown. We students adored him. Sure, we applaud every professor on the last day of class, but we gave him a standing ovation. He will be missed.

Professor Goldberg was a great teacher.  He helped illuminate a murky world for me (and countless other bewildered students, no doubt), exuded decency, and brought clarity and humor to the subjects we studied.   I will always remember him fondly, with respect and admiration.  As law professors go, it's rare to be able to say all three of those things (even at Georgetown).  My sympathies are with his loved ones.

My friends from law school know that I often referred to this fine man as “Goldberg-my-hero.”  GULC has lost a great professor, and the world has lost a thoughtful, compassionate, respectful, and humble man. I know that his memory lives on in the thousands of law students who were wise enough to recognize a gem when he taught them.  May God console you among the other mourners of Zion.
