

Don Hogan Rountree, 93, of Rogers, AR, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2010 at Ashley Health and Rehabilitation in Rogers. He was born on January 30, 1916, in Pisgah, Arkansas, to Micajah Rountree and Minnie Ola Steed Rountree. He graduated from Arkadelphia High School and attended Ouachita Baptist College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. After college he taught school and coached in Jessieville, AR. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe. He served as a captain in the chemical corp. Toward the end of the war he was placed over German POW’s. While on a military leave he married Scyblene Glover on July 29, 1943. They were married for sixty-five years. After the war he chose golf as his profession. He began his career as an assistant golf professional at the Texarkana Country Club and later served as head professional at the El Dorado Country Club for eighteen years. In 1965 he went to work for Cooper Communities supervising the construction of the first golf course in Bella Vista where he also was their first professional. In 1971 he became involved in Prairie Creek Country Club as a family business. He was a lifetime member of the PGA. He served as President of the South Central Section of the PGA in 1969. In 1995 he was inducted into the Arkansas State Golf Association Hall of Fame for his service to the game of golf. In 2002 he was inducted to the South Central Section Senior Hall of Fame. Hogan taught countless people to play, love and enjoy the game of golf. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. He loved teaching golf and reading his Bible. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Scyblene Rountree; infant daughter, Carolyn Jane Rountree; two brothers, Steed Rountree and John Rountree; one sister, Aletha Green. Survivors include his two sons, Don Rountree and wife Bonnie of Rogers and Bobby Rountree and wife Lenee of Rogers; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Bruce and husband David Bruce and Sarah Rountree; and one grandson, Seth Rountree. A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Rogers with Dr. Wes George and Reverend Tommy Hinson officiating. A private burial will be held.
