John Stephen Coatney, 78, of Bentonville, Arkansas, passed away July 4, 2026. Born February 23, 1948, in Lebanon, Missouri, John was the son of Iran Kenneth Coatney and Kathryn L. Carney Coatney. From his earliest years, John carried himself with a steady thoughtfulness and a quiet wisdom that shaped the way he worked, served, and loved those around him.
John graduated from Fayetteville High School and attended college in Conway, Arkansas. He went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from June 29, 1967, to June 14, 1970, earning the Purple Heart along with several awards—an enduring reflection of his faithful commitment and the strength of character he brought to duty and country.
In civilian life, John was known as a hard-working man who built a life through persistence and care. He worked as a life insurance agent in Wichita, Kansas, and later pursued business in Arkansas, including mobile homes, J & C Enterprises (vending fresh name brand products), and rental properties. In each endeavor, he applied practical judgment and a considered approach, earning the respect of those who knew him and the gratitude of those who relied on him.
John’s interests reflected both curiosity and devotion to the simple pleasures that make a life rich. He traveled widely—England, Japan, Australia, Canada, Alaska, Central and South America, Hawaii, and Panama—embracing the world with an appreciative eye. He especially loved skiing in the snow. He was a loyal fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks and the St. Louis Cardinals, enjoyed World War II movies, and could often be found watching old westerns. When he was young, he played the piano, a quiet reminder of the depth and gentleness that lived alongside his steady resolve.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn L. Carney Coatney; his father, Iran Kenneth Coatney; and his brother, Kenneth Michael Coatney.
John was married to his loving, devout wife, Cilcia Coatney, for 32 years. Together they traveled everywhere and did everything side by side, a cherished partnership marked by devotion, shared purpose, and enduring love.
John will be remembered as beloved and cherished—faithful in service, thoughtful in spirit, hard-working in life, and wise in the ways that matter most.
